And you're right. Selling sexiness does take away from the game and there are other, targeted business models that cater to selling the sex first.
I think the WNBA can learn from the LPGA. It's taken some time, and it will never be the PGA in attendance or money, but it has become a recognized and stable business. Gimmickry just takes away from that.
Another thing to consider is that while the domestic sports market may be saturated, women's basketball has a lot of room to grow internationally. There are a lot of young women in other countries who need role models and a stage to aspire to with their athletic careers.
