Phil sat out that year after losing to LB and was embarrassed by the 4-1 ouster in the finals after assuming that it would be a sweep. However he did realize that the Pistons had something going there and may been critical of LB while praising the Pistons in his book.
I am sure he would have considered taking over the Pistons reins if he had been offerred the gig and probably would have had Darko actually playin in the 05-06 season. However that darn Kevin McHale ruined that scenario by firing Flip mid season and there he was waiting in the wings ready to lose more conference finals. We could have even had Nate McMillan instead of Flip "
