Stats like those are only useful if the team can look at it and say, "wow, we should try to make that happen." If they see that assist stat and decide to be more unselfish with the ball and it results in better outcomes, then it was useful. There is no way any team would ever say, "let's make sure we have an odd score at halftime." So, yeah, I totally agree.
An example of that isn't so blatant, is when they give a stat that is caused by winning and suggest that the stat was responsible for the win. Like, the Pistons are 5-0 when the bench plays the entire 4th quarter.
