Talk is just that, talk. I don`t have a clue what team Webber will sign with and to be honest, if I were him I wouldn`t choose Detroit. The way they have been playing may have convinced him to talk to LA. Let`s face it, the Lakers actually have an offense in place that suits C-Webb`s skills, not to mention a chance to play with Kobe.

I agree with you that the Lakers don`t have a chance to win a title with their current roster, but who knows, with Webber in the mix, Odom comes back strong, LA lands a couple of FA next year and who knows....

When C-Webb says win a title I don`t think he meant this year, he is probably giving the team he considers about a 2 year window, IMO.
Here is the big difference.

It is one thing to have your agent mix talk around the teams who might be interested, this after all, is his job: to get the maximum financial benefit and to put his client in a situation that will increase his value for future possibilities.

What you, as a professional, are showing is a projection that all teams are at the level of acceptance. What I mean by this is that given broad perimeters, that your client has expressed (CWebb said to a contender) no one team is at a disadvantage. All are heard equally.

No club wants to put themselves into situation which might cause internal team member doubts and then the rumors start spreading. Professional negotiations must be handled this way.

This all changes when a ballplayer personally starts negotiation. This unbalances equal rights and I might add, ethical considerations for the ballplayer personally. We would also have to add the agent's name in this equation, but the real world gives them special considerations. They usually start out lacking.

What we need to understand is that the process is just as important as the desired end.

If Mr. Davidson knew this was going on, I doubt very much this would be an acceptable negotiation. JD needs to pull out and the sooner the better.
