You get points for points and penalized for misses. Misses are penalized based on the expected value of average NBA shots - i.e., what the team would have expected to get if the shooter had turned down the shot and given up the ball to an average team mate.

For Dice, boards were up by over 50% in round one and pretty much every other stat (include free throw percent) was up in the 40% range. Those things made up the difference.
