Jon Weinbach of the Wall Street Journal (subscription) wrote a fascinating article (turns out I am not ashamed to link to an article that I missed more than ten days ago) about how the NBA is managing its referees. At the point when the article was published, referees, says Weinbach, were calling fewer than 46 fouls per playoff game this year, which is the lowest playoff rate in decades and very similar to the regular season.
We should be thankful for that, right?
Mark Cuban, apparently, had something to do with it, by inspiring the NBA to keep careful track of its referees, which they have been doing with a multi-faceted approach detailed in the article.
