NAISMITH MEMORIAL BASKETBALL HALL OF FAME ANNOUNCES FINALISTS FOR ELECTION IN 2006
NCAA Women’s Championship Coach, First-Time Eligible NBA Star and Sportscast Legend Headline Group Placed on Ballot

SPRINGFIELD, MA – February 17, 2006 – Geno Auriemma, women’s coach of the University of Connecticut, former NBA Stars Charles Barkley, Joe Dumars and Dominique Wilkins and ESPN Sportscaster Dick Vitale highlight a list of 16 individuals named as Finalists for election into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Class of 2006. The announcement was made today in Houston, Texas, site of the 2006 NBA All-Star Weekend.

The complete list of Finalists includes 10 candidates from the North American Screening Committee – players Charles Barkley, Ralph Sampson, Chet Walker, Adrian Dantley, Dumars, and Wilkins, coaches Don Nelson and Gene Keady and contributors David Gavitt and Vitale. Two candidates each comprise Finalists from the Women’s Screening Committee – coaches Van Chancellor and Auriemma – International Screening Committee – coaches Pedro Ferrandiz and Sandro Gamba – and the Veterans Screening Committee - player John Isaacs and contributor Ben Kerner.
I can't see Joe making it past Barkley, heck, even Dantley.

Oh well, maybe AD will get in and we'll have one more former Piston in the Hall.

Re: Looks like Joe Dumars HOF snub again

Dumars as a player in my opinion was just too unselfish. Thats a not a knock but it did contribute to him perhaps not playing enough for HOF status.
Dumars only had 7 or 8 good years before he volunteered to have his mins cut so the rebuilding Pistons of the early 90's could find time to develope Alan Houston. Most players in his situation would have demanded a trade to a contender but not Dumars. He stuck it out with the Pistons.

You have to keep in mind, this is the "Basketball HOF". The determining selection does take into account the success as a GM or President over the last few years.

So with the quick turn around of the franchise, 2004 'ship with 2 finals appearances back to back (soon to be 3 staight), he has to have a better shot, with that taken into account.

I say JD & Barkley (although I've never liked him) are locks...but then again there are a few other finalist that I dont know very much about, so I could be completely wrong.

#1 Pistons. I did not know post-player accomplishments were factored in. Yes his GM status should put him over the top then. Kind of weird blasting Dumars in one thread about Darko and complimenting him in this one. Different topics. Overall obviously Dumars has been a great GM.

Re: Looks like Joe Dumars HOF snub again

You can't blast Dumars about Darko.

Those who blast him for drafting Darko and consider it to be a mistake should realize that it has to be the best draft mistake ever made in the NBA.

I'm hoping Joe D. gets in. His career is one of quiet brilliance and he epitomizes the near-perfect player from on and off the court that young guys ought to emulate.

Jeez, Barkley, as good as he was, IMO was all talk. He deserves to be there but maybe Joe should get in first.

Re: Looks like Joe Dumars HOF snub again

Its not like its one against the other (finalists).

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I think there is a panel that puts in votes. A panal of 27? Not quite sure of the numbers. And Joe would need 18 of 27 votes to get in. I'm sure the panelist gets more than one vote, but I'm not sure how many. So, there are usually 5-9 finalists that get selected (again not so sure). Although, this is all that I've heard or read.

Does anyone know the specific details of how the HOF selection works???

The Class of 2006 will be announced on Monday, April 3 at a news conference in Indianapolis, Indiana prior to the NCAA’s Men’s Championship game. A Finalist needs 18 of 24 votes from the Honors Committee for election into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Auriemma, Barkley and Gavitt are Finalists in their first year of consideration by their respective Screening Committees. Kerner, Nelson and Sampson are first-time Finalists who have previously been reviewed by screening committees.
Their website sucks for information on enshrinement.

This link is interesting:

Basically, the guy is saying that it's a joke that Dumars is even being considered for the Hall.
