| The Things We Don't Hear(or read) Much About No in-game chat on this one people. No stats, rumors, updates or predictions. But all in all a good read. A winning team can often do more than enchant the fans of the game, as witnessed by much more dramatic cutural shifts and happenings as with the Detroit Tigers and the riots back in the 60's. But Pro Sports teams can also have an impact on things that are very important, if not as dramatic. Forgive me if this is the worng area to start this thread. I'll get with the program eventually. Maybe I just need to take the time to read more. http://www.detnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll...603190305/1283 |

| Re: The Things We Don't Hear(or read) Much About The NHL is pretty heavy into this stuff too. The Mario Lemieux Foundation, the Cam Neely Foundation... The NHL actually gives out an award at the end of the year, with the other awards they give, called the NHL Foundation Player Award. Darren McCarty won it in 2003. There is also the King Clancy Memorial Trophy awarded annually to the NHL player who best exemplifies leadership qualities on and off the ice and who has made a significant humanitarian contribution in his community. Brendan Shanahan won that award in 2003. I don't know about the Tigers or the Lions. But it's good to see the NHL and the NBA so active in their communities. I also like the fact that the NHL recognizes the guys with awards, presented at the same time as the on ice awards.

| Re: The Things We Don't Hear(or read) Much About Good call guys! Don't get me started on how huge the impact of the 1968 Tigers was to the community after the riots of 67... unbelievable tension... several of us saw this first hand.... nothing much more dramatic than watching city blocks burning in your neighborhood... tear gas.. tanks and jeeps with riot gear... driving down your street... utter chaos as we huddled in our houses under curfews living under what appeared to be martial law. One year later after the 68 series win, blacks & whites were hugging in the streets as we waited for "Willie the Wonder" and "Stormin' Norman" Cash to come down the parade route... they were our modern day hero's

| Re: The Things We Don't Hear(or read) Much About I wasn't around for that(The Riots and the Tigers). I was 1. But I've read enough and talked to enough that people were to have an understanding of just how much it meant to the city. I'm kind of like Micro in that I didn't have as many toys as some(Not whining here at all, I had a great childhood with a great Mom) and I grew to love the library. Plenty of places to get in trouble when you're hanging out on Vernor and Junction. I spent many hours reading the books that the library provided. If seeing the Pistons there helps out ONE kid, it was worth the time and effort. It's just nice to see our new Bad Boys, Playing the Good Guys, |
