Field Goal %

Anyone else think this is strange?

Pistons are 2nd in the league in point differential at +7.05 but are completely average in FG diff at +.002 .454 for and .452 against. Other teams like SAN rank 0.474 to 0.432, Dallas .463 to .442, Miami 0.478 to 0.439.

Pistons sustain on simply getting more shots than the opponent with a TO differential of 14.1 to 11.2 and an advatage in 3-pt shooting of 0.384 to 0.331. I have not checked how the 3-pt diff matches up but it has to be amoung the leagues best.

Is it because the Pistons take more 3's and that brings down the overall pct thus making the pultry 0.002 diff in overall FG% not a true indication of Piston D?

Watching the games it seems like the defense has not been too bad. I think its been on par with last season at least.

Re: Field Goal %

Turnovers via intangibles. Blocks, steals and defensive rebounding.

Yes the Pistons do enjoy a nice measure in blocks and steals. Steals would count as TO's. Blocks are +2.4 per game at 6.0 to 3.4 so thats an extra 2.4 shots per game not counting for the opponent.

Actually Defesive boards are in deficit. But I am not worried about defensive boards. Probably one stat I could care less about when your team is putting up more shots per game. All that says is the opponent has more chances to rebound.

Offensive boards are the real measure. Pistons are +0.3 in offensive boards. Not great but its been improving in the stretch run.

I've never understood why, if you know your teammate is going to shoot, other teammates aren't in a position to board. Often there's no one to board.

The Pistons are funny in that way. They can be an outstanding rebounding team, when they need to be. They appear to turn their attention to the O glass when the shots aren't falling. I guess it is the natural thing to do, it's just that they have greater command of that particular part of their game than most teams.

Other teams do it to. It's like they are trying to fool the other team into thinking they aren't ready to shoot.

Re: Field Goal %

Remember folks when you shoot mostly jumpers you are talking about long rebounds. It is difficult to get in position for a long rebound. That`s why you see Detroit tapping the ball or attempting to tap it to a teammate.

The majority of the offensive rebounds the Pistons get is when the Pistons are attacking the basket, thus allowing one to get better rebounding positioning, because the ball will not fall far from the hoop after a miss. (Does that make sense)

Hopefully somebdy will know what I mean!

Re: Field Goal %

Maybe I'm oversimplifying ... but when you add together the Pistons' stinginess with the ball, their effective 3-point shooting, crisp offensive execution and still pretty stifling defense, it adds up to:

More points per shot + More shots per game = We win going away
