Advice to new Detroiters

If you're a new player/coach in a major Detroit sport, do not choose jersey number 3. Look what has happened to Detroit number 3s in the last year:

Alan Trammell (Tigers, #3) : Gone
Joey Harrington (Lions, #3) : Gone
Ben Wallace (Pistons, #3) : Gone
Andreas Lilja (Red Wings, #3) : Okay, he's still in Detroit, but just wait...

Re: Advice to new Detroiters

Funny thread.

OK, my seven year old was on a little league team last year. They were picking numbers and the coaches wife said "Take number three it was Babe Ruth's number". So he did.

He runs up to me and proudly states "Dad, I have number three. Do you know whose number that is?"

(I'm thinking Ben Wallace, but know that can't be right since I'm in Idaho). "No, tell me".

As his entire team and coaches watched attentively, he loudly and proudly exclaimed "it belongs to some guy named Beethoven"

Hence, his new little league nickname was born. Yep, number 3...stay away from it Detroiters!

If Ben would have re-signed in Detroit, I think we would have eventually seen the #3 hanging from the rafters at the Palace. That is never going to happen now.

It's debatable whether Ben deserves that honor or not. I would say "no," but others could make a good case for "yes."

Selling tickets. That's the only time the Palace has honored anyone during a game. To sell tickets.

But so true.

Or do other teams do it to? Retiring Jerseys should be enough.
