Re: Two First Round Draft Pick 2007

Can we trade a pick? Do we have anything of value to package with that pick?

I see a problem: the preponderance of youth...a.k.a. low draft picks. Delfino is behind the learning curve at this point. J-max's situation doesn't look all that good this year. Amir is not ready. Acker and Blalock are interesting stories but are still long-shots as contributors. Add to that the two picks. One will be in the teens, the other in the 20's.
As much as I like Acker (and blalock) I would really prefer a #11 pick over a #60 D-league regular. If we don't play our prospects, and with the addition of Flip, it becomes more likely that we won't, we will end up with too many players fighting for that last roster spot and we would STILL have to bring in a guy to be the 1st option off the bench.

Re: Two First Round Draft Pick 2007

We can trade the Orlando pick, not our own.

You cannot trade your own first round pick in consecutive years. We traded our 2006 pick for Carlos Arroyo.

The pick trade rule is partially due to former Cleveland Cavalier's owner Ted Stepien who traded away all of his picks (along with several horrible, Dick Vital-esque trades) completely destroying his franchise.

In the old days, you could do crazy stuff like trade 3 first round picks and 6 players for one player.

Rumour has it that former Pistons GM Jack "The Trader" McCloskey once offered the Lakers the ENTIRE Pistons team for Magic Johnson.

Re: Two First Round Draft Pick 2007

Sounds like the Mike Ditka trade for the rights to Ricky Williams when he was with New Orleans.

Or the Eric Lindros trade to Philly.

Whoa there, big guy. It's consecutive future years. What happened last year is completely irrelevant to the rule. You can trade away every single first round pick your team ever gets as long as you wait until the draft is over to trade away the next year's pick.

Detroit can trade away both the Orlando pick and our pick in the upcoming draft.

I re-read past the Stepien Rule and stand corrected. We can trade both of our picks this year.

Don't feel too bad, I thought it was the same way even before you said anything.

Even after re-reading that link, it could easily be missed.

Re: Two First Round Draft Pick 2007

I'm happy Hobbs corrected me. No sense in spreading false info.

What I did wrong was read the first part that says consecutive years and not further that explains the workaround. Should have known better.

Re: Two First Round Draft Pick 2007

Here is a look at the top 40 prospects going into next year's draft according to Proffesor Chad Ford. Obviously this thing will change quite a bit, but you can kind of pick out some players that may interest the Pistons and get a little idea of who may go where:
  1. Greg Oden, C, 7-0, 245, Ohio State
  2. Kevin Durant, SF, 6-10, 190, Texas
  3. Joakim Noah, PF, 6-11, 230, Florida
  4. Josh McRoberts, PF, 6-11, 230, Florida
  5. Al Horford, PF, 6-9, 235, Florida
  6. Thaddeus Young, SF, 6-8, 210, Georgia Tech
  7. Brandan Wright, PF, 6-10, 210, North Carolina
  8. Julian Wright, PF, 6-9, 220, Kansas
  9. Tiago Splitter, PF, 7-0, 240, Brazil
  10. Hasheem Thabeet, C, 7-3, 265, Connecticut
  11. Jeff Green, SF, 6-8, 225, Georgetown
  12. Spencer Hawes, C, 6-11, 230, Washington
  13. Ronald Steele, PG, 6-2, 185, Alabama
  14. Luc Richard Mba a Moute, SF, 6-7, 215, UCLA
  15. Roy Hibbert, C, 7-2, 265, Georgetown
  16. Corey Brewer, SG, 6-8, 185, Florida
  17. Tyler Hansbrough, PF, 6-9, North Carolina
  18. Ante Tomic, C, 7-2, 237, Croatia
  19. Marcus Williams, SF, 6-7, 207, Arizona
  20. Chase Budinger, SG, 6-7, 190, Arizona
  21. Jianlian Yi, PF, 230, China
  22. Javaris Crittenton, PG, 6-5, 180, Georgia Tech
  23. Jermareo Davidson, PF, 6-10, 230, Alabama
  24. Jason Smith, PF, 7-0, 230, Colorado State
  25. Gerald Henderson, SG, 6-5, 205, Duke
  26. Mario Chalmers, PG, 6-2, 170, Kansas
  27. Brandon Rush, SG, 6-7, 205, Kansas
  28. Glen Davis, PF, 6-9, 290, LSU
  29. Trent Plaisted, C, 6-11, 245, BYU
  30. Paul Harris, SG, 6-4, 220, Syracuse
  31. Aaron Gray, C, 7-0, 270, Pittsburgh
  32. Anton Ponkrashov, PG, 6-8, 214, Russia
  33. Tywon Lawson, PG, 6-0, 190, North Carolina
  34. Renaldas Seibutis, SG, 6-6, 180, Lithuania
  35. Wayne Ellington, SG, 6-5, 175, North Carolina
  36. Richard Roby, SG, 6-5, 210, Colorado
  37. Malik Hairston, SG, 6-6, 200, Oregon
  38. Dominic James, PG, 5-11, 175, Marquette
  39. Uros Tripkovic, SG, 6-5, 190, Serbia
  40. C.J. Giles, C, 6-10, 235, Kansas
Breakdown
PG - Six
SG - Ten
SF - Five
PF - Eleven
C - Eight
Plus there are eight players 7 feet or taller. So who jumps out on this list that the Pistons may have a decent shot at?
