| Re: Flip can help Flip can help the way Kelly Tripucka would help. He can score but you won't get any defense in return.
This type of player is useful to bad teams or teams transitioning to a winning squad. They may not win you games but they will create the impression of competitiveness.
I rewatched all of Will Blalock's minutes last night just focusing on him. Defensively he didn't contribute much but he also didn't make a lot of glaring errors. The kid could probably benefit from some attention in training camp.
On offense, Will did a lot of good things. He brings the ball up quick, he initiates the offense, he looks to setup Maxiell, or put the ball in Rip/Delfino's hands. People are ragging on his lack of scoring, and then admit that they like he is a more pure PG. The grass is always greener.
Last night in 9 minutes, he was -1. This was mostly playing with other bench players. Flip Murray played with the starters and finished -6 in 38 minutes.
I was surprised while reviewing the game that Flip Murray did have several sequences where he gave up the ball quickly, the weakside crossover on Nash came on a play where he gave it to Sheed and made a strong move to get the ball back. But for the most part, Flip doesn't move a lot and his lack of a jumper doesn't create spacing so without the ball, you could argue that he is doing as much or as little as Blalock.
The thing that separates a winner from a loser is the ability to make your teammates better. When Flip had that break and faked a pass to score the layup, that was a loser move. In that situation, you feed Tayshaun and get the thinman pumped up. It's something that Rip (despite his numerous turnovers) has mastered. You feed your running mate who gives up touches in the set offense so you can get yours.
Considering how many shots he takes, does Rip usually look like he is forcing it? Except when he is stone cold from the field, heck no. Billups and Murray look like this at times, even if they are hitting.
I'm hoping we can go .500 or slightly better with Billups out. Flip doesn't have a developed team game. He might be awesome at one-on-one basketball, but I know that he isn't so good on ISOs that he will draw double teams or take over games.

Lucic cut his hand in a fight with Michael Komisarek. "I'll be fine," he said. "(X-rays are) negative, but there's so many broken bones in there from before you can't really tell." |
