Rip's dad

After the bizarre TNT screw-up last night at the Lakers game where they mis-identified Chris Webber's dad (Roscoe posted the clip in the game thread), I was reminded of something regarding Rip's dad that I remembered from before he became a Piston, or even before he was in the NBA. When he led UConn to the Final Four in '99, I remember seeing a shot of his dad in the stands--in their family, it's "Big Rip" and "Little Rip"--and thinking that he looked EXACTLY like Rip, only 20-some years older and with a graying beard.

The only other time I've seen "Big Rip" in a picture or on TV was in the Finals a couple of years ago, during a halftime feature on Rip's continuing love for his hometown of Coatesville, PA. They talked to his dad for that piece, and I remember thinking that although you could see a clear resemblance, it wasn't quite the spitting image that I had remembered from the '99 Final Four. Can anyone find a picture of his dad on-line? Or does anyone but me remember this from the '99 Final Four? I swear his dad looked like Rip had just stepped into a time machine and walked out 25 years later.

Re: Rip's dad

I'm pretty sure Rip's dad is actually Chris Webber's AAU coach.

The second guy you saw could have been Rip's step dad.

Re: Rip's dad

He has a step-dad? I can't seem to find anything at all about his family anywhere online.

Re: Rip's dad

I just found a mention of Rip's parents in an ESPN article:

Quote:
Not far from the middle class development of Brandywine Homes, where Rip Hamilton was raised by his parents, Richard Sr. and Pamela Long, there are two slabs of asphalt and, rising out of the ground, steel poles with chain link nets on rusty old hoops that always present a hazard to fastbreakers. Here in Ash Park, reps are made and destroyed, depending on whether or not you brought your A-game.
And here's a photo of Rip Sr.

Re: Rip's dad

Thanks, lurker. Those pictures of Big Rip are what I remember him looking like in that halftime feature from the '05 Finals that I mentioned above. Still, even though he doesn't quite look like it in those pics, I can't shake the memory of him looking like Rip Jr. with a beard when they were at the Final Four!

Pretty classic stuff in that book excerpt you linked to at ESPN, from Rip's birthday party a couple of years ago:

Quote:
I spend most of the night just inside the roped-off VIP area chatting up the Coatesville crew and watching the women vying to crash the party. One in her mid-20s, dressed in fishnet stockings and a tight black skirt, manages to convince a bouncer that she's a guest. She gets all the way to the tight hallway outside the former champagne room. She can see Hamilton's white do-rag bobbing in the crowd. She whispers something to the bouncer guarding the entrance. He isn't buying it. She'll have to wait for Hamilton to come to her.

She stands for nearly 25 minutes with her neck craned skyward, staring intently in Hamilton's direction, willing him to make eye contact with her.

"Do you know Rip?" I ask her.

"Yeah, I met him twice. Once at a mall," she says with confidence. "He definitely remembers me. I'm just waiting for him to come out. We're really good friends."

"If you're such good friends, how come you're standing here?"

She shoots me a frown.

"The bouncer doesn't recognize me. They usually have a different bouncer here."

When the house lights come up, it takes the club's staff nearly half an hour to clear the way for Hamilton's crew. The girls in fishnet's gang are reluctant to leave without any face time. Two bouncers drag one away by the arms. She curses them, telling them that her brother will be back to shoot up the place.
Is her brother's name...Stephen Jackson?

Gotta love the "I met him twice, we're really good friends" story. Oh, but once was at a mall!
