Laimbeer with the Pistons? Don't count on it

Standing pat doesn't hurt Pistons

Q. Watching former Piston Bill Laimbeer playing with Chauncey Billups and Swin Cash on All-Star Saturday, I was wondering where Bill has been this season? He's not doing the television broadcasts anymore and we haven't seen him at any home games.

A. Laimbeer, after leading the Shock to their second WNBA title, decided he needed a break and relinquished his television duties. That's one reason. The other is, Laimbeer was miffed he was not given much consideration for any of the assistant coaching jobs the Pistons had available before the season.

The Pistons hired Terry Porter and Dave Cowens, without even talking to Laimbeer. Laimbeer has aspirations of being a head coach in the NBA, but it is highly unlikely he will get that opportunity with the Pistons.

That's really a shame. Bill would be good for this team...he obviously got the ladies motivated. To me, it doesn't really make sense to leave him outta the Piston's picture.

I wonder if Joe held off asking Bill because he has an opposing basketball philosophy to Flip's?

Or did Flip beg Joe not to hire Bill?

Or was Joe afraid Bill might kick Flip's ass at practice one day?

Yeah, but that's just piss poor to not even give the guy an opportunity to apply for the job. If he was Black there would have been a huge uproar about this.

The guy has proven himself, at the very least, with Xs and Os. He deserved a chance to at least be interviewed. They didn't just replace one assistant...they hired TWO and never even talked to him.

With all the crony-ism in this league this guy has at least done something to warrant being given an opportunity to assist in the L.

Especially by Joe. What kind of personal issues must Joe have with Laimbs?

I think all three of those would apply in this case. Flip would be looking over his shoulder the whole season if the team was struggling and ole man davison would be more inclined to turn team over much faster to Lams than TP or Cowens.

If I won a couple WNBA titles for Davidson, I'd feel probably feel like I should be considered for the promotion.

I've been wondering the same thing. Joe's always been mild-mannered and reserved...and Bill has always been despised by people outside of Detroit. It's now apparent to me that Joe was worried about the personality clash with Bill, especially considering the NBA's new-age 'let the stars shine' doctrine of O over D.
This is now a kinder, gentler NBA...thank you Ms Stern.

Bill got screwed by Stern's politics. Can someone tell me what qualified him for the job?

At least we got the damn ball back!

I can only guess. I have seen a few Shock games and one of their biggest draws is still Laimbeer. He is making a lot of money fpr them as the Shock head coach so perhaps thats whats holding him back.

Who knows? This is a question worth being asked. It would be a lot of fun to have him associated with the Pistons.

IMO, bringing in Laimbeer as an assistant after Flip failed would be a terrible call. We already talked about Flip being on the way out because we had two former head coaches on the staff. What would it be like to have such a popular successor? For better or worse, Joe is trying to empower Flip.
If we have a coaching change, bring in Laimbeer. If they snub him again, I;m with you. I just think this particular season, its just not the right situation
