Flip Murray - Here to stay?

Rocky Mountain News - Denver and Colorado's reliable source for breaking news, sports and entertainment: Nuggets & NBA

Quote:
Pistons guard Flip Murray, who said he almost signed with Denver in 2005, doesn't anticipate invoking a player option this summer and becoming a free agent. "I don't plan on opting out," he said. As a restricted free agent in 2005, Murray said he "almost got a chance" to sign with the Nuggets, but "they went a different route when they (signed) Earl Watson."
He's been playing better lately, even a little defense.

Despite his flaws, he's dirt cheap at less than $2 mill a year. The Pistons would be hard pressed to get better value for his salary.

Re: Flip Murray - Here to stay?

I think we can get good value for his contract next year (trade)... providing we're still under the tax.
He knows that if he was worth more he would have received a better offer... this year hasn't done anything to make a case for a bigger pay day.

Re: Flip Murray - Here to stay?

Flip Murray is not going to be in the Pistons plans for the long view so I say trade him or waive him when the opportunity arises. He needs alot of touches and playing time to even be halfway effective. I have noticed in the last few games he hasn't come in with that shoot the ball mentality that has him riding the pine. What are his talents anyways? He's not a point guard since he isn't that talented in dishing and setting up plays, his defense is only barely adequate (he likes to go for the steals), his 2 guard skills are lacking since he's not a reliable scorer. He's just lucky, all of his playing time he's gotten because of injuries, suspensions or expectations early in the year. I would rather the Pistons develop Blalock and let Flip just become practice fodder.

Re: Flip Murray - Here to stay?

Why should he opt out? No NBA team wants him as a basketball player anymore, and he'd have to be a fool to turn down the free $2 million.

Perhaps some team will want his contract in the offseason or next year, and given Joe Dumars's recent free agency decisions the Pistons would probably get better value with the trade route than just waiving him.

I wonder if Dumars considered signing Shamond Williams last summer. He may have decided that Shamond's game was a lot like Lindsey's and Joe D. wanted someone who could score more, though Shamond has a pretty nice looking 3 point shot. He plays a real good in your face one on one defense, like Lindsey.

He has looked good lately. He is playing ahead of Farmar who has found a comfortable? spot at the end of the Laker bench to spend his time during the Laker games.

LAKERS: Lakers Sign Shammond Williams

Still can't believe Joe was dumb enough to offer Flip our full mid-level exception last year, and Flip was even dumber to reject it.

Scary

I agree. It may be finally sinking in that no teams really want his style of play. Hopefully for us, this year, that will help him become more of a team player.

Flip may have gotten it right in benching him? Think it taught him anything?

Yes this is a scary thought... 4 years of cap hell for a no defense chucker.
When we signed him this forums response was a collective Uhg!
Still trying to see what Joe saw in him.... if we get something for him then all is forgiven.
Someones gotta go next year... we won't have the available roster spots.
man Cauncey has Joe over his lap now.... we don't sign him and we need to keep the MLE open for Amir... how'd ya like to have Flip, Hunter & Blalock (or some rookie other than Law) as your PGs?

Re: Flip Murray - Here to stay?

A low value underdog, with some obvious flaws and obvious potential.

Joe saw a possible breakout player. A guy who could be a CB like acquisition, hence the CB like money.

Joe was taking a risk that Murray could be CB insurance and possibly a replacement. Trying to find that guy who is just looking for a chance, some security and a solid org. to stand behind him.
