Playing in the SL would look good if he was testing FA, and would be a good faith gesture if he intends to be back in Detroit.

The kid is a gym rat, and last summer he played in at least one additional league. That one had almost zero media coverage.

Maybe they (his posse) doesn't want him getting hurt without an NBA contract in his pocket.

Re: Amir Johnson - Detroit Piston Tracker

If McCoskey's figures are true (and they are reported on various sites), that leaves about $6mil for Amir + FA. We'll see what happens.

It makes sense to me. Amir's value is about as high as it will be right now. Talk alone has teams willing to tender offers for him.

What happens to that value if he suffers some freak injury playing in the summer league?

Better he sits out until the ink is dry on that contract.

AJ running the break, behind the back no look passes, got to love it. '

He actually reminds me of Magic. LOL

I was just looking at some stats for AJ the last two years.

What is interesting that had passed me by before without thinking about it is that in the last two years AJ has played in a total of only 50 games between the D league 17 and 22 last year and with the Pistons 3 and 8 games respectively in the last two years and in total since he graduated from high school.

That means in

2005-06 AJ played in only 20 games total
2006-07 AJ played in only 30 games total

The 50 games total are about 1.5 college seasons!!!

Conclusions:

He does not have a heck of a lot of experience so we probably can expect him to make a lot of mistakes because of that inexperience. I know my statement is not anything we already don't know; i.e., that he doesn't have a lot of experience but when I look at the actual numbers that fact seems more pronounced to me.

While he did average 35 about minutes a game last year between Sioux Falls and the Pistons the fact that it was in only 30 games means that if he is used a lot he plays regularly; i.e., over 20 minutes a game, he will probably run into some kind of wall around the all star break like rookies do who get regular minutes.

Quote:
Johnson, a second-year forward, has appeared in 22 games with the Skyforce averaging 18.9 points, 9.7 rebounds, 3.14 blocks, 2.1 assists and 35.1 minutes. Sioux Falls finishes the NBA Development League regular season with two games against Fort Worth beginning tonight. Drafted 56th by the Pistons in the 2005 NBA Draft, Johnson averaged 17.3 points, 7.2 rebounds and 1.5 blocks in 17 games last season with the Fayetteville Patriots of the D-League.

Did you factor in that college games are 8 mins shorter and the amount of and lengths of practices are tightly controlled?

And he doesn't have the stench of Rick Pitino on him that he may have had?

Gotta think it's going to be tough for a guy with basically 0 fat getting 10-15 mins a game to hit a wall.

I never said he would hit a wall at 10 minutes a game. So on that I agree with you.

Over 15 minutes he will hit the wall if he plays in all the games.

Last year he only played 1,000 minutes no back to back games and very little travel.

At say 20 minutes a game that is an increase of about 50% in minutes, plus all the back to backs plus a significant increase in hotel time and air travel. The last two; i.e,. hotel time and the amount of air travel are the hardest adjustments to deal with.

If you have done a lot of air travel especially cross country type stuff you know how physically and mentally draining it can be. Plus there will also be a lot more pressure on him this year, being with the Pistons.

He will probably hit a wall if he plays much over 1,250 minutes this coming year.

Does that mean he won't be effective? No. I won't say that

However, after the all star game he will probably develop tired legs and most likely lose some of his quickness and explosiveness at that time, which will negatively impact his outside game and his rebounding for the remainder of the season.

I hope I am wrong on this. We will just have to wait and see. Flip might not even give AJ as much as 15 minutes a game, yet alone 20 a game, so it could turn out to be a non issue.
