Discuss: Amir Johnson - Detroit Piston Tracker at Detroit Pistons Fan Community - PistonsForum.com

Maybe there is something wrong with Amir? What possible sense would it make to keep him on the bench otherwise? ...

Re: Amir Johnson - Detroit Piston Tracker

Jahnke wrote an article over at freep.com about scarce minutes for the reserves. In it, Saunders is quoted as saying some pure non-sense. Now he is trying to say he simply can't find time for Amir due to how he likes to match up our bigs. This is by far the most far fetched non-sense I have read anywhere about the Pistons this year. Not that he is not ready. Not that Flip does not want to play him. Just Flip can't figure out something so simple as to how to get Amir some time on the floor.

Let me make a simple suggestion. Flip Saunders, quite making up excuses. If you don't think the guy is ready, say so. You will be wrong, but at least honest.

Here is a very simple way to play Amir, while never pairing up Jason and Amir:

At five minutes to go in the first quarter, sit either Sheed or Dyess down. If that is too complicated, have one of your assistants sit down with you and explain it in detail. See, you got two starters, one named Sheed, the other Dyess. Pick one of them. Sit him down with five minutes to go in the 1st quarter. Need more detail. Write it down. Absorb it.

Now, to start the 2nd quarter, bring that guy you sat down back in to play along side Amir. Wow, Amir is playing. I hope that was not too complicated. Glad to repeat it anytime as needed.

From there, lets say Amir plays five minutes. Jason Maxiell plays the last 7 minutes of the 2nd quarter. Both Sheed and Dyess have rested some at this point, so you can play either one as needed along side JMAX.
In the 2nd half, you can do the same exact thing, or choose not to play Amir. At least Amir would get five real minutes in the rotation plus any garbage time.

Does this take that much time away from anyone? Lets see. JMAX plays 20 minutes if he finishes the game out. Dyess and Sheed split 66 minutes between them, or 33 minutes each.

If Dyess really needs to finish that many games out over JMAX, which is doubtful, you cut Amir out of some 2nd halves, so that Jason plays the first five minutes of the 4th quarter. You can also simply sub Jason in earlier as needed to swap minutes with Dyess if you need Dyess more at the end of games.

There is no problem getting Amir minutes. Flip made this one up. Quit it. It just looks silly as all heck.

PS, The comments by Flip, if you think about it, could be construed as making a fool out of Dumars, who said very clearly that JMAX and Amir were suppose to be the energy players to come off the bench. Remeber the no DNP thing, supposedly from Joe? Joe surely did not imagine that Flip would ever come up with something this non-sensical. I wrote this post to point out how silly Flip's comments are, but they are fundamentally wrong in the first place. Amir and JMAX can indeed play some time on the floor together.

Re: Amir Johnson - Detroit Piston Tracker

But the bottom line is this: Amir is on the bench. Whatever Flip says is not as important as getting Amir playing time. And I agree that this whole thing just doesn't make much sense.

Re: Amir Johnson - Detroit Piston Tracker

It's obvious, Amir is our secret weapon. Amir's game is G-14 classified information. See he's really a 7' PF/PG/SF/C, with the stroke of Larry Bird, The driving ability of Zeke, the passing skills of Magic, The post up game of a Shaq/Kareem/Mchale hybrid, and the strength of a DHoward/Lebron hybrid. He's kinda like Jason Kidd/Ray Allen/Lebron/Duncan/Parker/KG all rolled up in one and we are trying to hide this secret weapon from the rest of the league. He's a guy who shoots halfcourters like layups with a 75" vertical. We will break him out only in game 7's of the playoffs. He will never show his full arsenal, only enough for us to win by 1pt (and he has been instructed to make it look as normal as possible, almost like it was pure luck), because then Davidson would have to compete with other teams in a bidding war and go over the Lux Tax to sign him......and we know that is just simply unrealistic. How is it you guys dont know this stuff, I thought you were REAL Piston Fans.

I sent an email to Joe D. and told him that the Pistons Forum is demanding burn time for AJ.

Doubt that it will even reach him.

But I felt a little better sending it.

I guess we should monitor his minutes. If we see an increase, we'll know where all that is coming from.

Re: Amir Johnson - Detroit Piston Tracker

I still like that comparison to Maxiell's rookie year, I forget if that was in this thread or another one. I'm not really that worried about Amir...I see him starting to get burn next year, BUT, and this is a big but, he should have a chance to back up Dyess since Dyess is getting too many minutes anyway, and there's still PLENTY of time before the playoffs. But if it doesn't happen I don't think I'll freak out or anything, we're still going to be very competitive next year as well...
