When joined by Pistons forward Amir Johnson, whose listed height of 6-foot-9 has been of some debate, the coach made his second-year forward stand against the Chauncey Billups growth chart on the wallpaper. "6-10," Saunders said. "6-11, really," Johnson replied.

He is not a second year player unless that party was from a year ago.

This is his third year.

It's from this year; you're right. Langlois' clock/calendar must be stuck or something.

Side note: I know Flippy's made a lot of excuses as to why this kid doesn't play, but someone mentioned hearing McCraspky say on the radio that the reason is Amir can't shoot (errmm..it's an ugly shot but it goes in, doesn't it. Range out to 3? Kid doesn't even need it, since according to Flip, young guys are only for "energy" and we have way too many jumpshooters on this team; we don't need another one) and his defensive rotations are bad. (errmm, Flip, doesn't that apply to Brezec too?) Flip hates playing him so much that even when the rest of our bigs are sucking he goes small just so he doesn't have to.

Flip must have some kind of issue with Amir. He didn't put him in the game until it was way beyond being over with just 3 minutes to go. How's he going to ever develop if he's sitting?

Re: Amir Johnson - Detroit Piston Tracker

All this speculation. Can someone please get the scoop on why Amir isn't playing??? don't we have a writer in the area that can sit down with Joe and get us the answer????

I am tired of all the excuses. I want to hear what Joe has to say about this. If Joe tells me that he is not ready yet; I'm good with that but it just makes me want to puke.

Re: Amir Johnson - Detroit Piston Tracker

Isn't the 3rd year when NBA players usually start producing? I thought everybody on the whole planet talks about that. The third year is being very important. I don't know, I must be hallucinating.

This is Bynum's third year.

I still say we should have traded AJ for Bynum.

Of course the Lakers would never have made that trade.

But what good would that trade do if Bynum would've been glued to the bench? He's only developed because he got playing time. He averaged about 20 min last year, and this year he's full-fledged starter. Sure it helps when you have to fight for minutes with Kwame and Mihm vs. Sheed, Big Ben, and Dyess.

Bynum wouldn't have been glued to the bench if we had gotten him this year.

Look at how many minutes he played last year.

He would have played.

Probably not started, but would have been in the second unit front line with Maxey and Hayes/Herrman?

Maybe AJ is so motivated right now with a new 3 year $10 plus million contract in his pocket. Not bad for someone who only had no college basketball and only 11 NBA games.

Quote:
Now that Bynum has taken another massive developmental step in his third NBA season, Coach Phil Jackson was asked Wednesday if there was anything that could have made it happen sooner.

He paused for seven seconds before answering.

"No."

In what way?

"It's the idea of 'OK, yeah, I've got to dedicate myself to this process and that's a start.' Now you find someone that's going to be your workout guy.

"You start it by saying, 'I'm an alcoholic, I need to go to AA.' It's the same process: 'I need to get in the best possible shape I can. I need to have a vested interest in that.' As soon as you do that, you turn the corner."

What motivated Bynum?

"My guess is his contract," Jackson said. "Dollars are green. The idea, that 'Hey, it's coming up, I've got to get some traction here. This process is real short.' "
AJ wouldn't be the first guy to slack off in effort after signing a big contract. A three year $10 million plus contract for a guy with no college basketball and only 11 NBA games is large by anyone's standards.

Now I am not saying that that is what is happening, because AJ continues to maintain that he has to work hard. But saying and doing are completely different things.

Maybe he isn't working hard enough to develop like Flipper and Joe D. want him to, so he is sitting.

A player needs to show max effort all of the time, whether in practice or in a game.

The proof is as they say "always in the pudding" and right now the pudding is sitting on the bench.
