Flip's perception is clearly flawed. He pointed out something that happened 2 times in 39 games and is using it as rationale for not developing one of the most physically talented players on the team.

First of all, does he foul at a higher rate than others? Well, he is slightly behind Lindsey Hunter, Stuckey, and Hayes, but was ahead of Bresec.

Secondly, does he do anything to make up for it? Let's see here, he also rebounds at the highest rate on the team, which makes him 35% more effective on the boards than Sheed. His offensive rebounding rate is off the charts, 300% greater than Sheed. He also blocks shots at a hellava clip. Best on the team, which means 145% more blocks than Sheed.

So my question is this. How the H can a guy lead the team in offensive rebound rate and block rate (with the respect of a rookie) and not lead the team in fouls? Do you want him to kick butt in there or just blend in? We all know that a high % of clean blocks are called as fouls, so that makes it even more amazing.

Guess who leads the team in blocks/PF? Amir by a mile.

This is too easy. I need to start going to bat for Hayes or something.
As if Flip would play Amir for more than 15 minutes a game. Come on Flip, get a better excuse. Amir would not come in after about 4 minutes left in a quarter where all the 5 team fouls would have been used up. Stop talking nonsense, Flip.

If Amir play more regular minutes, he might get into a rhythm defensively and not be a foul prone? Stuckey needs all the minutes now so he won't be a turnover prone and Amir can't get any minutes now cuz he's foul prone?

When you're doing your poll, try to get a reading on the Bill Davidson name recognition too.

You have Joe's e-mail address? I think Buddha does. We should have him send a message to Joe from the forum.

Re: Amir Johnson - Detroit Piston Tracker

So far Amir's saying all the right things. We'll see where it goes from here:
Quote:
Johnson recognizes that reducing those mistakes is crucial. "I do have a tendency [to foul] because I'm a shot-blocker," he said. "Basically what I have to do is just really stay on the ground and time my shots and wait until they shoot the ball. I'm working hard every day in practice and just working on my defense with those guys and playing hard. I'll get better."

Do you agree with Lee that watching young players develope will pack the Palace?

Not all young players. But yes, I think that giving Maxiell PT helped attendance. Similarly, I think that playing Stuckey over Flip Murray probably energized the crowd a bit. And an exciting player like Amir Johnson will provide even more of an impact.

I think that when people go to a game, they want to see 1) a win, 2) a hard effort, and 3) exciting plays.

The starters provide #1 on a regular basis. If they are overplayed, then #2 and #3 tend to suffer.

However, when the bench gels, then they provide effort/ energy, exciting plays, and they actually HELP us get wins. It's a little bit of a catch-22 to get there because some of the players will have to feel their way around a bit before they become a net positive. Stuckey needs to get a feel for the PG spot. Amir needs to get a feel for the refs... and also earn some respect from them.

If I were really an extremist, I'd be calling for Samb and Mejia and all that. All I want to see is Stuckey, Afflalo, JMax, and Amir. They are all very mature young players with unique talents.

Is seems to me that for an athlete doing the right things is far more important than saying the right things.

It appears to me that AJ is doing the right things.

He needs to

1. Keep working on his defense
2. Bulk up over the coming summer

Next year his minutes will go up accordingly.

The ball is in his hands and so far he seems to handling it very well and doing the right things with it.

obviously you haven't been to the palace in awhile, because in the regular season there's a huge chunk of people that go there for the social setting and drinking and hobnobbing. :O

Re: Amir Johnson - Detroit Piston Tracker

Amir Johnson’s minutes are tied to fouls

Excerpted...

Quote:
I’d also like to add this: as much as I’d like to see Johnson get more minutes, I just don’t know where they’d come from. Rasheed Wallace, Antonio McDyess and Jason Maxiell are playing very, very well. Plus, those three can play the four and the five, whereas Johnson isn’t strong enough to match up with most centers (not to mention some stronger power forwards).

If this were some kind of computer simulation, I’d just input Johnson for 6-8 minutes a night no matter what, but there’s something to be said for continuity and keeping the guys on the floor in rhythm, which is awfully hard to do when you’re constantly pulling guys off the floor and using a 10- or 11-man rotation.
