There are a lot of athletic guys in the NBA, in fact the majority are, even though most are not as athletic as AJ.

What makes him special is that he has a gift of being a natural basketball player. He just knows instinctually what to do. This is not something you can teach. He reacts on instinct and by far most of time his instinct is correct. This is what will make him special. Yes he is very athletic and there is no doubt that this will also help make him a special player once he learns enough of the nuances. However, it is gifted basketball instinctual ability that will make him really special.

Yep.

And an absolute joy of the game and a hunger to be great.

Although his physical assets are not often duplicated.

Re: Amir Johnson - Detroit Piston Tracker

Something I realized today...

Amir's first game in the rotation was the Philly game on January 23rd. The Pistons have not lost since that game... 10-0

Coincidence? I think not.

Amir has only stepped on the court in 4 losses this year. He has been involved in 30 wins. That means that the Pistons are 9-9 when Amir gets the DNPCD.

A lot of this is the garbage time phenomenon, but 4 losses is pretty tough. It basically means that he and his compadres haven't made it a habit to give up the lead when they get their PT.

Coincidence? He has 111 points and 111 rebounds this year.

He's making great progress," Saunders said. "He went through a stretch – I told him 'I'm not just going to give you minutes; I want you to earn them.' I kind of explained to him how I kind of brought along Kevin Garnett a little bit. Garnett, at a point when he was a rookie, showed he really wanted it with his work ethic. And that's what Amir's been.
"He's had an unbelievable work ethic this year, even when (Jason Maxiell) was playing so well, he was having trouble getting on the court, and we shortened our big guys rotation there for a little bit, he kept on working and working."

Flip also says something about "expecting more" from Amir, but I can't be sure. The full interview can be listened to on the link.

Re: Amir Johnson - Detroit Piston Tracker

I just can't totally give him credit for all this like he wants.

Amir was arguably the most talented high schooler in the country when we got him. AND he apparently has one of the best work ethics... comparable to KG. Detroit has had energy problems for a few years now.

Remember how we all thought Amir was the secret weapon last year and we were either saving him to unleash in the playoffs, or we were hiding him to re-sign him at a below market rate? Well, it turns out that Flip was just doing the old build-desire-through-suppression technique.

Yeah right.

Even so, I don't care, as long as he gets all the PT he "earns" going forward. This dude is a weapon.
