Re: 2006/7 Referee Statistics

Thanks for the stats Coyne.

Obviously we don't want to see Phil Robinson, Eli Roe or Marc Davis doing any games..especially together..

But Benny Adams, Dan Crawford, Jim Capers, Jess Kersey, and Jason Phillips would be nice

I'm so glad this was assembled! Now I can run my Mark Cuban calculations.

Re: 2006/7 Referee Statistics

Thanks, guys. I wasn't sure how statistically significant this list was, since there were a lot of guys who only reffed 1 or 2 games, but I thought it would be interesting to see. Usually we just talk about "the refs" as if we had equal chances with any crew on any night. What I should have done is count how many fouls were called against us vs our opponents and whether it was a home/away game. Now that would have been interesting! And I would have failed all my classes spending all that time on it.

Now does anyone know whether they release the schedule of who will be officiating at which games?

Re: 2006/7 Referee Statistics

Detroit Bad Boys has some technical foul info compiled!

Tracking the referees at Detroit Bad Boys
Quote:
As I’m sure you’re aware, Rasheed led the league with 19 technical fouls this year, not to mention two that were rescinded by the commissioner’s office and one from the preseason. While the task of trying to figure out which ref actually gave Rasheed the T in each game would be would be incredibly time-consuming (if not simply impossible — I don’t know if that data is actually published anywhere), Erin was able to compile a list to see which refs were at least working that game (ie, just because someone appears on the list doesn’t mean they actually blew the whistle, it just means they worked a game in which one of the refs did).

So who officiated the most games in which Rasheed got a tech? Good ol’ Sean Corbin with five games. But it didn’t really hurt the Pistons — checking the HVC list, we see that the Pistons actually compiled a 5-3 record under Corbin this year.
The list of referees who called games Sheed received a tech is in the post.

I think it would be interesting to tally the fouls and foul shots taken by the Pistons and their opponents for each of the referees home vs away.

Swallowing Whistles

Quote:
Jon Weinbach of the Wall Street Journal (subscription) wrote a fascinating article (turns out I am not ashamed to link to an article that I missed more than ten days ago) about how the NBA is managing its referees. At the point when the article was published, referees, says Weinbach, were calling fewer than 46 fouls per playoff game this year, which is the lowest playoff rate in decades and very similar to the regular season.

We should be thankful for that, right?

Mark Cuban, apparently, had something to do with it, by inspiring the NBA to keep careful track of its referees, which they have been doing with a multi-faceted approach detailed in the article.

Re: 2006/7 Referee Statistics

Apparently the article is free right now and doesn't require a subscription.

Free Article - WSJ.com

Be sure to read the whole TrueHoop entry though because the UPDATE at the end is interesting to read as well.

Re: 2006/7 Referee Statistics

This is some interesting info. But it still doesn't cover certain players getting calls and consistency, even though overall it looks consistent, from game to game we all know how it works.

Just wondering.

Did you adjust your numbers for the opponent they played? (You might be able to use the result of your study as a school paper).

In other words it could be that the officials that we win the most with just happen to be officiating when we play the the lousier teams and vice vesa?

I think that is at least one filter that we need to see to determine if there is a real statistical significance by official regarding the Pistons winning or not.

Thanks
