Cutting their teeth on the Pistons

DREW SHARP: Pistons can teach, for now
Quote:
That reality only further validates the Pistons' strategy of squeezing as much championship contention from this core as quickly as possible. As long as you're contending, it's nice having experience. But that has a quick way of becoming old when the young dogs constantly on your trail finally pick up the scent.

"The East doesn't get the credit it should from having a wealth of great young players like Dwight and Bosh and the others," said Hill. "It takes time, but the more playoff experience you get against a very good team like Detroit, the more it's going to help you down the road."

It'll take time, but the young guns of the East are learning the tough, but necessary, lessons of maturity at the Pistons' knee. It's just a question of time before they're big enough to take the Pistons over their knee.

Re: Cutting their teeth on the Pistons

Does Drew every see anything in positive light? He aways complains about the home teams. Although, there is some truth to the squeeze that he's mentioning. We totally stalled the development of our young talent. Although, if Amir pans out (and he should) and we get someone else good in the draft and give him playing time, there's no reason that Pistons shouldn't be good for years to come.

Cynicism is Drew's angle. He's a columnist, not a reporter.

As far as I am concerned, with Mitch Albom writing for the Free Press, you cannot have enough counterpoint cynicism on the staff.

Re: Cutting their teeth on the Pistons

Young player development is grossly overrated. Most young players that are going to be the future stars of your organization have what it takes before they arrive. Very few players, if any, take the Jermaine O'Neal route to stardom and teams would be foolish to waste their opportunities for victories on a guy that needs to be babied along for 3 seasons before he can provide anything of consequence.

If your young player is going to be the leader of tomorrow, you pretty much can see it today...you don't need 3 years of meticulously scheduled minute rations to figure out what you got.

Re: Cutting their teeth on the Pistons

How about Kobe in addition to O'Neal? How about Kwame Brown? I know he's not a star, but he developed into something that helps Lakers. They're much better with him in the lineup. You can't really say judging by the first couple of years, especially when someone is only 18-19. That's why lot of times draft is a crapshoot, unless you have someone like LeBron - where you can't really miss.

Re: Cutting their teeth on the Pistons

All of us older guys know this. The Bad Boys needed 3? playoff tries against the Celtic before they turned the tables. Even if Zeke did give them one. Jordan only took 2 playoff rounds before getting over the 3rd time. Our current group needed the Nets to implode before our finals appearence.
This is why we need to thump the Bulls good this year. I think they sniff weakness in the Pistons and that's encouragement enough.
