He was not going to commit to anything in a radio interview. You could tell that anything is possible change wise if its a good change.

I agree that he should consider coaching the team himself next season.

His days of being the best GM out there are long gone. Time to step it up again and do something fantastic.

Re: WDFN 1130AM Joe Dumars Interview June 11 2007

I don' think Joe was being cryptic or bluffing. He was very clear in what he said.

He is just as upset about the way the season ended as anyone. He was saying not to assume that he is happy with the way things went. That no one is more critical than himself, just that he makes his criticisms known to individuals behind closed doors. He sees no point pointing the finger and ripping people in public (Furious George Karl anyone?).

I think he took a hands-off approach the last two seasons. Gave the coaching staff and players the opportunity and room to make their own decisions and determine the culture and attitude of the team. Given their past success and the personalities and supposed leadership on the team, this is not unusual or irrational (or a sign of drug abuse).

Now that things have smoldered, he is saying that he will not let this happen again. He will get down and dirty and have much more of a say than ever as to how the team is operating and what mindset they are adopting (including how Rasheed is behaving), from the coaching staff down to the very last player on the roster. Shape up or ship out. Its my way now or the highway.

I agree with him. The coaches and players are getting paid to do a job. If the job's not getting done, its on everyone. Was it purely Flips fault that the players let LeBron waltz down the lane? They are a veteran team who have been to the ECF how many times in a row? Frankly, Flip should not have needed to say one word. And I bet he did say something. Just that the players did not listen nor think about what was happening (like that's a rarity in the NBA). Even the best ever, Chuck Daly, said players tune the Coach out after a short period of time, himself included. And its getting worse. And he said that many years ago.

I don't know any coach out there that you could guarantee the players would all listen to. So he may as well lay down the law himself and stick with Flip for now and through the majority of his contract.

As someone pointed out earlier, Flip does not have the luxury of Popovich or Riley (both hold executive power making decisions), or even Phil Jackson, who seems as to have more input in terms of player decision as any non-GM/coach out there.

The problem is bigger than just Flip. And the solution involves a lot more than just firing Flip and talking about ridiculous trade speculation.

I trust that Joe will do what needs to be done now and into the future (even if JVG is not coming to town).

I got the impression that Webber was complaining about lack of playing time during the playoffs, and Joe's comment about coasting was about him. I don't think Prince was guilty of coasting as he just had his hands full trying to limit LeBron.

From the FREEP.

Krista Jahnke from the Freep front row, Matt Dery from WDFN at the back.

Joe looks like he is sitting on a Palace folding chair.

Joe looks like the 2nd biggest person in the room compared to the lady on the left.

He had to say something because he has been silent all the way since the debacle but, you know, ain't nothing is meaningful before the draft.

I couldn't have said it better myself. Joe said that he couldn't sleep after game 5, he said that there's not a word to describe how he felt. He also promised to cut down players minutes, he did talk about stepping on players' gigantic egos. I just hope he can follow through on this. This is all we have been talking about in here ever since the Cleveland series turned South. (except changing coaches).

That's how Joe is. He's not going to say anything, he's just gonna do what he feels he needs to do.

Re: WDFN 1130AM Joe Dumars Interview June 11 2007

I love how he kept coming back to the point that if folks are not happy with how things are being dictated, they are free to go to a mediocre team and get away with whatever they want. I LOVE this! Making it sound like he is going to be holding people accountable. Also, I loved the emphasis on results "Do you bring it?" Really great interview, thanks Roscoe! Joe is making me believe that this team will remain championship-caliber.
