#15 Pick - Rodney Stuckey

Rodney Stuckey

In a nutshell: A combo guard that the Pistons will hope to fill out the guard rotation and bring scoring off the bench.

The details
Quote:
Strengths: Combo guard compared often to Dwyane Wade. Amazing scorer – averaged over 24 a game his freshman and sophomore seasons. Can hit the deep shot, mid range jumpers or blow by his man and get to the hoop. Good ball handler. Good NBA size – strong physique. Great passer – 5.5 assists per game this year. Very good rebounder for his size and position. Great free throw shooter. Gets tons of steals.

Weaknesses: A year older than other sophomores due to a redshirt year. Played in a small conference – the Big Sky isn’t exactly a frequent breeding ground for NBA pros. Needs to improve his shooting, especially from deep (26.7% his sophomore year from 3-point land). Needs to cut down on his turnovers.

In terms of his style of play, Stuckey reminds of Wade to a certain extent as well, although he is obviously nowhere near as naturally talented. He has very nice ball-handling skills with either hand, being the main facilitator of his team’s offense, and likes to push the ball up the floor in transition. His footwork is outstanding, and he’s able to draw plenty of fouls through the work he does from the triple-threat position, either getting his man to bite on a pump-fake or going to the basket after utilizing a big time crossover and stopping on a dime from mid-range.

Re: #15 Pick

below 30% 3pt shooter from the college line.
6'4", won't be playing the 3
Sounds like he will be better than Flip, due to a better mid range jumper
Can he play the point?

Still no backup 3

BTW, gotta love Isaiah dumping Stevie Francis for Zach
Everyone's getting better in the east, what about Detroit?

This could haunt them. Have to think Nick Young was the better fit. A two that can play the 3.

Re: #15 Pick

I hope I am wrong, but I think that we are going to regret the Stuckey pick. I would have prefered Nick Young or Joe D. picking up the phone to move up and get Al Thorton once he fell below 10.

Re: #15 Pick

did you guys see his interview on ESPN?... this guy is humble, down on his luck with grades, hes hungry too. I think he fits the mindset Joe D is looking for and he has the driving inside game we seek, he should work. As for covering the point, i started a thread to discuss that we'll have two combo guards to backup our 1 and 2.

Re: #15 Pick

Lets go back to 1998 when the C's took paul Pierce at the 10th pick and we had to settle on Bonzi wells who was later traded. I am thinking we have a similar scenario tonight as Al Thorton who was taken by the Clippers right ahead of us at 14 will prbably be as valuable as Pierce, two years from now, and knowing the Clippers he will be starting by mideason ahead of Mobley.

With Stuckey he will have to prove himself in the summer league and camp to assure that he gets those Hunter/Murray minutes as the 2nd person off the bench.

This was a done deal if Law was already gone. But who knew Thornton could have been right there too. That is why clipps passed on Criitenton by taking the bext player available.

My opinion for the 27th pick if the desired big men are gone is to see if you can trade it for some experience big man who can play now, not another project who rides the pine with Dupree, Davis etc. Maybe Nene since Denver doesn't have a pick in the first round.

I don't know. That was a tough call.

Hard to get a good read with these ESPN guys as they make everyone seem like a hack.

Stucky was only the 3rd guard selected in the entire draft so he can't be that bad. Does have size and strength. Looks like he could be that combo guard we have been looking for - at least I hope.
