That's why he should start for the Pistons next year. The starting lineup does not get enough points in the paint. Sheed could do it but with his age, mindset, and him having to guard the entire paint with Ben gone we can't expect that out of him now. Time to start Max. Dice is fine off the bench. Bring Amir, Dice, Afflalo, Stuckey, and C Webb off the bench continually. This team should have a versatile 10 man rotation at least next season. Nazr isn't a scrub he can play too, Flip Murray is better than a 12th man too. Their is no reason why this team should have a 6 man team next season.

Max would get abused nightly if you started him. He is best suited to come off the bench as that energy guy against other teams 2nd unit. There are only maybe 2 or 3 starting PF's in the league that he would be able to do well against. Flip Murray is not a total scrub, but he is not a point guard. He is a 2 guard and making him play point ruins what like he can do. Nazr could atleast come of the bench, but he is not starter material because he is simply too slow defensively to shut down the lane and stop guards and small forwards driving to the basket and dunking.

Re: Jason Maxiell 3rd Year

Am I a bad person because I want to see Max demolish Chris Bosh (who is one of my favorite players...)???

Re: Jason Maxiell 3rd Year

Maxiell is quickly becoming my new favorite Piston. That being said, I don't think he should start. I think one of his great strengths is his ability to abuse lesser players. Bring him in just before the offense goes stale and let him wreak havoc.

I also really like his ability to draw fouls on his defenders. I think this was underutilized last season, and is something that Flip or Mike C should really take advantage of.

It could be a combination of heavy/lean. Max is a heavy 4 and a lean 3. Amir just the opposite.

Both will need room to operate and only a slasher will keep the opposition honest. A set offensive pattern will help only if you don't have veteran big men. The pistons will have to change their style and keep the transition toward energy, continuous movement, improvised reactions from defensive intensity and continuous pressure. The youngsters will have to have a minimum of 10 minutes playing time per game. And hear me out...they should be mixed with the starting unit. What you don't want to see is the platoon system which defeats a player's self worth. The question one may asked: are you a substitution as an external clog, or a replacement in strengthening the whole?

From Marc Stein of all people:

Quote:
My favorite vet: Jason Maxiell
From the moment I got my first up-close access to him at the 2005 Vegas Summer League, I've been a big Maxiell guy. That was before anyone knew he could succeed in the NBA as an undersized power forward, back when the Pistons were equally unsure.

Now?

He's shed 25 pounds since last season, after getting his first meaningful playoff minutes for the Pistons. That means he's lean and mean in '07, attacking the rim and banging bodies with his usual ferocity . . . even though Detroit didn't demand that he slim down or that he play on its summer team for a third straight year.

Re: Jason Maxiell 3rd Year

A lot of NBA insiders are big on Maxiell. I remember his big game against the Cavs, or was it the Bulls, and the announcers couldn't stop talking about him on national TV during the playoffs. I thought that was tres cool.

The thing about Max is that he is a "little Ben". He plays a blue collar game, but makes the intensity exciting. That appeals to a very broad audience. People appreciate hustle and strength.

Re: Jason Maxiell 3rd Year

Still see him coming off the bench. He 'll have more effect that way. He'll pump up the crowd when he enters. About 18-20 minutes per game to start.

Re: Jason Maxiell 3rd Year

If Ginobili can come of the bench, Maxiell can do it. He's a bit of a ball hog, and that works better when he is out there with the 2nd string. They need somebody to be the man. Our starting unit is all about the pick your poison thing.

Re: Jason Maxiell 3rd Year

He is most likely to come off the bench. And I agree it would be in the range of 20-25 minutes. A lot also depends on the rotation of bigs and if there will be any changes and the status of Nazr.
