Amir signing is being delayed

From our favorite McCoskey:

Johnson was expected to join the summer league team in Las Vegas on Wednesday afternoon -- an indication a deal was imminent -- but he did not play.
The deal is still not done. The Pistons are believed to have offered a three-year deal worth as much as $10 million. It's possible that Bill Duffy, Johnson's agent, might have had interest from another team, maybe San Antonio. But the Pistons have made it clear they will match any offer.
Billups signs 5-year contract

Could San Antonio possibly mess up things here too? Joe will match, but at what cost?

Re: Amir signing is being delayed

That's interesting...I wonder if we are going to end up getting Koncak'ed a little bit.

If the Spurs have decided Amir is who they want, this could get expensive. Or did they read the 3 yr/10 mil offer in the press and decide that they would easily go 3/12 or 4/16 for that kind of potential...so why not test Joe's resolve?

Either way, I'll take the Spurs interest as validation of Amir's potential. I trust their evaluation of talent way over some anonymous "bench coaches" who don't think Amir is going to be that good. Assuming that whole report wasn't part of a disinformation campaign...

Tally, I agree totally with your line of thought here.

This is probably just Duffy working another million or two for his client.

For the Pistons sake, I hope we pay him more and give him at least another year. And we should be able to add a fifth year at the team's option. A good healthy sum Amir would be glad to play for, and that we would gladly pay-if he turns out to be as good as we think he is. In this way, the Pistons will be set for a long time up front without having to worry about breaking the bank any time soon.

I agree. The longer, the better, in my opinion. I think Duffy is pushing for 3 years and Joe D is leaning towards 4-5. Negotiations are somewhat under the radar, but we may look back in a year or two and see that this was one of the biggest deals in Piston franchise history. I think Amir will be an All-Star someday. Sign me up for the AHOF club.

Re: Amir signing is being delayed

I think this pretty much confirms the "hiding" theory.

The Pistons are trying to tie a guy up for 5 years when he played 100 minutes last season and was relegated to the D-League??? And it's not like he's done anything since then (like played in Europe).

So, I guess if I were him, I'd be negotiating pretty hard (ie telling the Spurs how much he'd help them). We have been consciously damaging his market value to keep the competition away. Why should he be loyal?

I think Amir will be loyal to the Pistons. He had a blast in the NBDL last year. He actually asked to go back to his NBDL team for the playoffs. The fact that Amir's agent is in Vegas talking to Joe D is a good sign. The deal will get done, but I'm not counting on Amir to get much action in the Vegas Summer League.

The reason that he's not upset is probably because he loves basketball and is a little naive. Any money for him now probably seems like a billion dollars.

I'm not complaining. It will work out very well for us. I'm just glad it didn't backfire.
