Where is Chris Webber heading?

There are all kinds of rumors circulating around about the future of Web. There's talk about his possible retirement. Talk about him going to Dallas or coming back to Detroit. When he had an interview he talked about Pistons as if he still was part of the team. I'll post what I find on him here. But what do we think?

Smith said Friday that he has been talking with free-agent veterans Chris Webber and P.J. Brown, among others. Webber finished last season in Detroit, but the Pistons may not re-sign him. Brown played last season in Chicago, but the Bulls are not interested in re-signing him. He said he will consider retirement but may play another year.

Chris Webber would really like to be back in Detroit, but the Pistons don't think he has what it takes to help them get another championship. It's unfortunate to think that Webber might be finished, but this is not the same Chris Webber who was so good for so long in Sacramento. This is a 15-year NBA veteran who probably looking for his last contract - and a short-term contract at that. Webber faded as the season wore along last year, averaging just 7.1 points and shooting 37% from the field in April. To his credit he came back and contributed in the playoffs, but the Pistons believe he's at or near the end of his career. A team that could utilize Webber for somewhere between 15 and 20 minutes could probably do well to extend his career for one more season. The Mavericks might be just such a team.
Wow! This is a strong statement.

He's also an option in Dallas, but ideally, you know he'd prefer to remain with Detroit. Although he faded late, Webber enjoyed his teammates and could be effective averaging 15-20 minutes a night. It doesn't look like the Pistons are seeing it that way though, because they haven't tendered an offer. Retirement could be forced upon him.

Re: Where is Chris Webber heading?

I don't think that the Pistons will sign him before the season starts or at least until before the Pistons have played most of their exhibition schedule.

Joe D. would clearly prefer to with the youth. Even if Flip doesn't play the young guys during the season as much as we would like, I think he will play them during the exhibition schedule, at least the first 4 or 5 games.

So if the young guys look good during October, I don't think that C-Webb will be back, even if he is available, or that we will add another veteran big guy, but rather go with what we have now.

I got nothing against going with the youth, but the problem is we don't have a youth centre!

Re: Where is Chris Webber heading?

Now I remember why I disliked Chris Webber before he signed with Detroit last season. If I had a chance to play for the team that represented my state/city, I'd jump on it twice. I don't care where he goes anymore. I do, however, care about his winning a title. I would be disgusted if he were to hold up that trophy next June with a team other than the Pistons. Luckily, if he signs with Dallas, that'll never happen. Hell, there's even a small shot of him signing with Orlando because he probably thinks his strong knees and willingness to be a team player who doesn't %%%%% will put them over the top and into the second round.
