Re: The 5th starter...who should it be?

just kind of wonderin about SAMB...is he even going to be on the active roster or is he just going to the D-league? if he has a good camp does anyone else here think he could possibly start or even come off the bench to relieve whoever the starter is? I havent seen to much info on this guy. Love, Peace, and Chicken grease.

I believe, from what I have seen in his summer league play, that he should not start, nor be a primary backup. But I think he should play 10 minutes a game for us. Mind you, that is not a very strong opinion. It can change after seeing him in camp, where it will be a lot more like the NBA. Still, Samb seems very quick, very fast, capable of shooting well, capable of passing well, and he is does it with a 7-2 athletic body. Thin? Yep, still thin, but getting bigger and stronger day by day. Lets a get a good look at the guy in camp before making any firm decisions.

Samb will spend the vast majority of the year in the D League. It is the best thing for his development to get regular minutes and he will absolutely not get them in the NBA this season. He'll get a couple cups of coffee when we want to rest some guys, but that's about it.

I didn't know that Cheikh had a younger brother who was also a baller

Obviously we haven’t opened this chapter to specifically talk about these two guys. It’s Mamadou Samb who is our real concern here. He’s a very long and athletic player with truly great potential, and he came back to L’Hospitalet after last year’s introductory performance. However, how Samb and Winterthur F.C.Barcelona are handling the development of that potential seems worrying, at least from what we’ve seen in the tournament. Just like last year, Samb keeps playing as a pure center, spending 90% of his time on the court asking for the ball in the low post, but we haven’t seen any improvement in this area. He’s still the same skinny guy who regularly gets outmuscled, and he did suffer to establish position and go to work with his back to the basket. He didn’t seem too feel comfortable at all there, particularly when he put the ball on the floor to start a move, while he didn’t show any significant footwork to feel intrigued about. All in all, he was pretty much a non-factor down low.
DraftExpress Profile: Mamadou Samb

Since this is from an article in June of this year, I would think that it probably has already been posted here, but maybe not.

This is kind of interesting, remembering that Cheikh has played hoops for only 5 years.

I got two questions. Do you think camp is even needed? (As it seems your mind is way made up.)

Second question is what exactly do you think Samb needs before he can play a little in the NBA. (Size, toughness, shooting touch, defensive experience, everything?) And which of these can he get in the D-League that he can't get playing a few minutes here and there for the Pistons

Re: The 5th starter...who should it be?

I thought camp was to get players back up to speed and integrated with the system and with each other. I suppose fringe players can miraculously buck what every professional around him expects and crack the rotation.

Why dole out 10 minutes to Samb when you can shuffle him off to the D-league? He can get more minutes there and you can use those minutes for AJ and Maxiell. Unless we can move Naz (unlikely!), Samb is better outperforming Naz while in the D-league for at least until the all-star break.

If you look at Amir, though, you'll get an idea of what the organization will do despite some great performances in the D-league.

Re: The 5th starter...who should it be?

It's tough for me to admit, and I've been in denial a long time, but I have no decision making authority over the Pistons, so if my mind is made up is completely irrelevant to training camp. Is it technically possible that Samb is just so good during training camp that he forces his way onto the roster and the rotation? Yes, technically, but it's like a 5% chance or something. It would be a shocking development. I tend to think of things that have almost no chance of happening as things that aren't likely to happen. Weird, huh?

The Pistons have stated that Samb is likely to spend most of the season in the D league as he certainly could use some time to adjust to America, gain weight, get regular playing time, get more experience playing organized basketball (as he started late), and get acclimated to the NBA style of basketball along with a billion other things. He's in the future and not the now. Amir and Max are the young bigs we'll be working in this year. Samb will get his chance next year.
