Webber thinking about coming back to Pistons?

ESPN - Webber pondering Greek team's multi-million offer - NBA

Quote:
Webber has said he is leaning toward returning to the Detroit Pistons, although signing Webber prior to training camp, even for the veterans' minimum, would have cap ramifications that the Pistons want to avoid. Webber is said to be comfortable with the idea of waiting at least a month or two for the Pistons' roster issues to work themselves out, which would allow him to join them in midseason as he did in 2005-06.
He's got a big offer to play in Europe, and I didn't really see this coming. I thought it was over with Webber's experiment.

I am not sure about how it affects the cap and when he has to sign, but if the dude wants to sit around for awhile and wait to see how Samb, Nazr or any of the bigs panned out, then let him sit with his dad in the stands until we need him...Hopefully we won't need him, but he did give us a few bright moments last season.

Re: Webber thinking about coming back to Pistons?

I heard on WDFN that the Greek offer is a 12mil over 2 years deal.

Normally that would be a no brainer but I don't Webber is about the money after that huge buyout last year and a career of max deals.

I would like to have him back for depth if anything. Dumars just does not seem to be interested. What cap ramifications? It would only be what 1.2 mil or so for next season?

I would much rather see Cheikh out there than C-Webb, even though I expect Cheikh to spend most of this year in the "D" league.

Time to start moving on to the next generation.

Re: Webber thinking about coming back to Pistons?

This team all of a sudden is very lacking in guys with any experience. When the season ended, I was prepared to say bye bye to Webber. But if he's willing to come back to a reduced role, can find some chemistry with CB, not become a distraction, and comes cheap, I'd be willing to bring him back.

Say What?

The top 5 guys who will get about 60% of the total minutes or more, unless the bench plays good enough for those minutes to be reduced, all have 5 or more years experience.

Hayes, Murray and Nazr all have at least 4 years experience.

That leaves 4 guys.

JMax is in his third year

AJ, Hot Rod and AA are rookies (For purposes of this AJ can be considered a rookie, though I am not sure if he still actually qualifies as a rookie or not.)

So you have 9 experienced players and 3 rookies. That doesn't seem like a team "lacking in experience" especially when your top 5 players all have 5 or more years experience.

Re: Webber thinking about coming back to Pistons?

I was talking about bench depth rather than starting 5. And of the bench players, I'm more concerned with playing experience rather than years sitting on the bench in the league. I'm talking about guys that I actually expect to contribute. I don't count a guy like Dupree or Coach Hunter. While I think having a guy like Hunter is nice for the locker room, I don't expect him to give us many quality minutes.

I think we have solid young guys, they just don't have a lot of PT. Guys like J-Max and AJ have been around for a couple of years now, but don't have much PT to show for it. Add in 3 rookie guards and a rookie C and the bench is looking mighty young. We recently replaced Delfino with Hayes, but we also lost DD.

Youth is great and I'm not complaining, I'm just saying that adding a quality vet that still has some game - especially a big man - for cheap would be a good move. I definitely want the kids to play this year, but I'd like to have a balance of youth and experience.

Fair enough.

But hold on a second.

Lets play a three on three game.

You and I will be the coaches.

You can have

L. Hunter
C-Webb
DD

I will take

Hot Rod
AJ
JMax

Are you game to go at it?

Sure, if you want to compare apples to oranges. I guess I could take the oldest and slowest players on the team while you took the top 3 young players. I guess that would be a fair argument. You win.

But how about I take

CB
Sheed
Tay

And you take
Samb
Mejia
Afflalo

Still confident you'd win?

At no point was I comparing talent, only experience. I think we need a BALANCE of talented youth AND talented experience. Not old guys for the sake of having old guys or rookies for the sake of having rookies. Guys that will help us win now AND later.

Now you have changed to squad to include 3 players who will be getting the most minutes on the team. I am not sure what that has to do with bringing back C-Webb and DD.

On top of that you changed my three.

However, being the good sportsman that I am I will take my original three of

Hot Rod
AJ
JMax

and go against your three of

Sheed
Tay
C-Bill.

I think by the second half of the year, you will be crying uncle.
