Item Number: BD-02687 with Flip Saunders,
Detroit Pistons (NBA) Head Coach
Through years of development, Flip Saunders has designed one of the NBA's most feared defenses. Coach Saunders unpacks his successful match-up zone defense. He begins his presentation by detailing the benefits of this type of defense.

His reasons include its ability to develop player's communication on the floor, stopping great scorers, great scoring teams, employing man defense principles, difficult to scout and can be used with big and small teams. His general match up rules are: Never leave the dribbler, never let the offense penetrate by dribble or pass, encourage ball to corners, switching cutters and contest all perimeter shots.

Triangles are the basis of player position in Saunders' 1-2-2 match-up zone. The basic rule is the farther your man is away from the ball, the flatter the triangle. Position is based on the ball and the position of your man at a given time. Strategy against the overload and pick and roll are demonstrated also. In Part II, Coach Saunders breaks down the 1-2-2 match-up zone defense in parts. Teaching slides while the ball is passed on the perimeter helps players guard all situations. As the ball is passed, each alignment, stunt and slide is analyzed by Saunders.

Another segment breaks down the pick & roll and its coverage. The match-up is a successful zone that can be played aggressively without fouling a lot. Therefore, you can play good defense while keeping the opponent off of the foul line. Questions are answered from the clinic participants while Saunders discusses and illustrates on the floor with players. Use this presentation to implement the match-up into your program.

A Flip Saunders DVD about Defense... Worlds shortest movie of all time? Or does he give his "Offense leads to Defense" speech on this as well. "Who gives a F*** about trying to contain dribble penetration or defensive rebounding.. As long as you shoot open jumpers you'll be set!"

Re: Flip Saunders: Match-Up Zone Defense

Maybe we are being misled by the league-wide scoring inflation.

So far through 16 games, the Pistons allow the 3rd fewest points in the league 92.68 per game. The Spurs are marginally better at 92.05 and the Celtics are the best with 87.43. In certain areas, we are better than the Spurs, like FG% allowed (a very important defensive indicator).

Meanwhile, we have the 13th highest scoring offense with 100.68 per game! Boston is virtually tied with us at 100.93 and the Spurs are a little better at 101.55.

Not too shabby, considering all the missed games.

A couple other notes. Our blocks per game differential is far and away the biggest in the NBA. And my favorite, we are undefeated at 7-0 when we score at least 100 points. Luckily we average over that mark.

Also of note is the fact that Joe Johnson was held to just six points. It’s a fluke, right? Maybe, except the same thing happened to Michael Redd (11 points). Not only is Detroit’s offense clicking, but their defense is as stout as always, ranking third in the league in points allowed per game. Some things change, but some things stay the same.

Re: Flip Saunders: Match-Up Zone Defense

We have officially overtaken over the Spurs for 2nd place in the points allowed per game category. We hold teams to a lower FG%, have a bigger block differential, steal differential, and even a bigger rebounding edge.

Also, we now own the longest winning streak in the NBA.

And Flip hasn't even put his foot on the gas yet.

Uncle Sheed is one heck of a coach. It must be because he talks on defense.

Quote:
Talk on defense. A great man-to-man defense is a talking defense. We must have passionate talk on defense - "I've got the ball," "You get him," "Hand up on every shot," "Don’t let your man cross your face," "Block out," "No second shots," "Back screen, back screen, switch," "Pressure the ball, you’ve got help."
