If you could walk in someone's shoes for a day

I'm filling out applications for grad school and one of the questions is "If you could walk in someone else's shoes for a day, who would it be and why?"

I'm been kicking around the idea of picking Joe Dumars.

The reason is that it combines something I love (bball/Pistons) with business with personal traits that I admire (humbleness, work ethic, patience, prudent decision making, etc.).

Just wanted to bounce it off you guys, get some more ideas, and generally tap into the collective mind of PF.com to come up with a deep perspective.

So any thoughts would be appreciated. Specific examples of his brilliance. Cool stories about his background. Feel free to throw anything up against the wall.

Also, what would you do during the day when you take over his body? Trade Flip Murray for Kevin Durrant is too unbelievable.

If you have any better answers than Joe D, sound off. I don't think the quesion is bound by time. So you could pick Gengis Kahn if you wanted. John Malkavich would be a weird answer, eh? I've thought of a lot of clever ones, but have been leaning more and more toward a Dumars-like answer.

Thanks team!

When I saw this thread title, I thought it was going to be about this article.
SI.com - Writers - Peter King: Martin walks for Ground Zero victims; Fine 15, more - Monday December 17, 2007 12:31PM
The first two pages are about George Martin, a former NFL player walking from NYC to San Fran to raise awareness and money for now-disabled rescue workers from 9/11. There's a little background about him in the article, too. Martin seems to be an extremely high-character individual who would make a great example of what you are looking for. A great read, we should be hearing more about these kinds of people in the news.

The problem with that would be that I'd actually have to walk!!! I guess I'd be pretty athletic though, so it would be a breeze.

I will check out the article, thanks.

If only I could again for a day, even in my own shoes!!!

I messed up my back a few weeks ago partying with a younger person of the opposite gender.

I haven't been able to even just barely walk since.

Couldn't get an appointment to see a specialist until next year.

Hopefully this mess will go away without an operation.

She was great, but it wasn't worth it.

Like I said to her afterwards. I am getting too old for this sheet!!!

Joe Dumars - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Just a refresher of the things that he has done and is doing.
  • Tough way to make it to the NBA, through McNeese St.
  • Jordan called him the toughest defender he ever faced
  • Won a Finals MVP/ Championship
  • Won Sportsmanship award and they named it after him going forward "Joe Dumars represents the best of the NBA," Granik said. "Throughout his 14-year career, Joe carried himself with dignity and integrity and showed that one can be both a great athlete and a great sportsman. It is with enormous pride that we will from now on be giving the `Joe Dumars Trophy' to our annual Sportsmanship winner."
  • Played for U.S. National Team
  • CEO and majority owner of Detroit Technologies for 10 years (auto supply company), before he eventually sold.
  • Joe Dumars Fieldhouse
  • On board of director's for First Michigan Bank- lends to small Detroit businesses who can't get traditional financing
  • Built a semi-dynasty in his image with the current team by choosing on character and work ethic over pure talent.

Hired Flipper. It is amazing what one big blemish can do to a person's resume!!!

So you're answer to the essay would be that you would go back, stand in your own shoes, and not try so hard to get laid? I love it!

Sorry about your back. I've thrown my out a couple times and it is a miserable experience. The tough part is that the doctors never seem to be able to give a definite answer on the cause of back pain. It's a fragile equilibrium for sure.

I'm glad he's made some mistakes. Otherwise they would think that I was making it all up.

The positive is that he isn't a meddler with his subordinates. In theory, I like that management philosophy. He makes it clear what he wants and then he judges over a long period of time.

However, in this case, the rogue employee is so out of control, that I would mind seeing a little micromanagement. I'm going to try to avoid turning my essay into a Darko/ Amir rant though. They just wouldn't understand.

Actually, for once, (there is always a catch when it comes to easy. LOL), I didn't have to try hard at all to get the candy. It was what I did with it when I had my hands on it that caused the problem.

There is a micro fracture down there. My daddy told me years ago that I should retire from the rodeo when I reach 50. I should have listened to him. I did manage to stay on the entire time though!!!

I honestly don't know if I should feel more sorry for you or for her.
