Former Sixers Coach says Webber had plenty of shortcomings

Three years later, we get some pretty harsh criticism of CWebb from his former coach.

Quote:
"In one of the first conversations I had with Chris Webber, I said, 'This is one of the ways we're going to use you offensively [down low with Kyle Korver on the outside],' " O'Brien said. "And he said, 'Coach, I don't do the low-post thing anymore.'
Quote:
"We needed a trade," O'Brien said. "We were very small. We were playing with two power forwards who were 6-6 in Kenny Thomas and 6-4 in Corliss Williamson. That was not a workable situation. What we didn't know, or what I didn't know at the time, was that the previous two years, Sacramento's record with Webber in and Webber out [of the lineup] was shockingly different."

The Kings were 38-31 when Webber played during that span. They were 51-16 when he didn't.

O'Brien said he soon found out why.

"Webber didn't practice at all that year prior to coming to us," he said. "I think he was just at the point where he didn't necessarily feel he was in need of practice, or could practice. It became apparent that he was not going to give the Philadelphia 76ers everything that we had hoped for."

I guess situation really does matter for some people.

He had no problem going in the post when he played here. In fact he wanted to do it.

When you say "post", don't you really mean elbow and free-throw line extended? I don't recall him actually posting up less than 15 feet from the basket all that frequently.

I assumed that's as close he could get to the basket now

That's more accurate. His turnaround hook was solid though, and technically he was giving us "post-scoring"

Webber was actually one of our best in terms of % of shots inside the paint last year.

Maybe he just didn't want to "put out" for a dead-end team.

All I know is that he didn't show for the playoffs........That's all I'm worried about.

Funny, makes me guess if the Kings could have won a shipt without Webber

Re: Former Sixers Coach says Webber had plenty of shortcomings

Webber played different basketball for 76ers. In general he was a jumpshooter with no inside game. It was strange when i saw him as a Piston trying to score near the basket. He doesn't have much left in his legs (countless misses because of it) but his iq lets him score buckets. I don't like O'Brien at all but he's got a point there. Chris wasn't the player they needed.

If those guys have strong personalities, what would you call Isiah, Laimbeer, and Rodman?
