Anyway, I appreciate the added motivation that Orlando is giving my team. - It helps!"

When asked why the bigs weren't getting more touches, Saunders smiled and said, "We tried, but unfortunately our guards have the ball in their hands. Sometimes they don't give it to them."
Translation:
"This whole 'score in the low-post' thing is still pretty new to us. Our guards are accustomed to thriving in a jump-shot oriented offense that places little importance on getting touches for our bigs unless they come in the form of an offensive rebound. For this reason, I've decided that I'm going to have RaSheed start bringing the ball up."

"The bigs didn't get a lot of touches," Saunders said. "It was just a situation where they jumped on us and we finally found something we could hang our hat on (Hamilton and Prince). But we have to make shots so we can set our defense. Once we set our defense, we usually can get into our normal offensive flow."
Um, can someone translate this for me ?

Not without making my brain explode.

Just kidding. It's only giving me nosebleeds and a migraine.

I don't ask the players to play hard on defense unless they are scoring. If we can't score, why defend? Just give up.

Flip doesn't help himself when he says silly things like this. Defense has always been about effort and desire. It's the constant you can bring every night. A defense that requires shot making to "get set" is a novelty act in my opinion.

Defense is where a team's heart lies, and where you can judge how bad "they want it".

Re: Flip Saunders Quote Translator

Flip talks it up to much at times... but really its a circle, when we make shoots its alot easier to get back into our set defense and when we get into our base defense were harder to score against... So he does sorta make sence.... (but don't tell him i said that)

I dunno what that's supposed to mean, but I think Flip has a blood relationship with Yogi Berra.

Re: Flip Saunders Quote Translator

things were pretty simple - good play whether scored or not gives a chance to run back to D.

And still D starts from paint - as long as maxi, dice and sheed refuse to work, nothing helps. Good D in paint allows to cover perimeter players more tighly or even gamble more: guard know that if his gambling in D fails, he can get help from bigs.
