Re: Flip Saunders Quote Translator

Hence the reason to bring in Dixon, Delk et al. We need guards that are halfsize.

Delfino must be the first NBA player traded because he was too tall.

this is typical flip. he loves to use the universal "you" and "your" like he's his interviews are meant to be "deep thoughts by flip saunders" and should be written down on a desktop calendar. wait...

example:

3/14
when you have talented people on the bench you want to use them as much as possible otherwise your chances of winning diminish.

3/15
you get in trouble when you commit fouls too early in a quarter... you're stopping the clock and putting your opponent on the line with an opportunity to score

3/16
you're happy when you get all five of your starters in double digits

the sad thing is that even though i just made these up, Flip has probably said them at one time or another

Re: Flip Saunders Quote Translator

Has anyone else ever noticed during the post game or any interview that Flip does; he ALWAYS cuts off the person asking the question before they are done asking? He always interupts them before they finish.

I guess that way he can spin his answer to say what he wants because he never hears the whole question.

I think half of a Cheikh Samb would still leave you a Will Blalock.

"That's usually what we're scoring, or giving up," Pistons coach Flip Saunders said (on the Nuggets 168 points), "so it'll be very much contrasting styles."
??? Not sure what he's going for here. We usually don't score 168 or give up 168. Also, we usually score more than we give up, so not sure how they could be one in the same. Oh well. I'm sure there are really amazing thoughts going on in his head and he just has trouble expressing them.

Quote:
Denver will "play the same no matter what," Saunders said. "It's just important for us to try to take control of the game.... We've got to set the tone of how the game is played."
Um??? Again, seems a little nonsensical. "It is impossible to change the way that Denver plays, therefor we will try to change the way that Denver plays. That is the key to changing the way they play, which as I already declared is impossible to do."

Re: Flip Saunders Quote Translator

For the first quote, the context in this Freep story is a little different:

Quote:
The Nuggets -- who begin a five-game road trip tonight at the Palace -- had 48 points in the first quarter, and 84 points by halftime.

"That's usually what we're scoring, or giving up," Pistons coach Flip Saunders said, "so it'll be very much contrasting styles."
The Pistons have averaged 98 points this season while giving up 90, so that's not exactly right. But it does seem like he was trying to say "what they had by halftime of that game is what we usually give up over an entire game," which is relatively accurate.

The other quote seems to be saying that Denver will run their offense the same way no matter what, but the Pistons will try to keep things at a slower pace to neutralize the advantage Denver gets if both teams play at a run-and-gun pace.

Re: Flip Saunders Quote Translator

Thanks Dumars. You should be his official interpreter for press conferences. I honestly thought he was babbling like a crazy man, but now I feel like there was at least a kernal of thought behind his statements.

Re: Flip Saunders Quote Translator

How about the Pistons usually either give up 48 in the first or score 48? It does kind of seem that way. First quarters never seem close.
