Y'know, having had time to let this sink in, I find myself hoping this is Rick Carlisle Exit Scenario Part 2. Like Roscoe said, it's still early. Unfortunately, there ain't no LB's out there for Joe to hire this time.
The thought of having to suffer through another season of watching my favorite team chained to a mediocre coach makes me sick.

I had a feeling it was might go down like this. The Pistons have to pay Flip if they keep him or fire him. They might let him play out his deal, rather than bring in a new coach, even an inexperienced one for $ 2 million a year.

It's very, very early yet.
I agree. Let's see how this plays out. Making a change w/o a clear idea of the overall plan is a worthless exercise. I don't want a new coach every 2-3 years. If Joe is hiring someone new make sure the fit is good. I would like to an action plan rather than a reaction plan. Take your time Joe.

Re: Flip will be back.

How often do you see lame duck coaches play out their contracts on the top NBA teams? My impression is - seldom. If Joe is not talking extension, it sounds mighty unlikely to me that we will see Flip here next year.

Exactly! If Joe doesn't extend or talk about an extension to Flip's contract it will tell the players that he has no confidence in his coach. Flip will be lamer than he already is. Next season would be a disaster as far as earning the players respect.

Re: Flip will be back.

McCosky said, "Saunders met briefly with Pistons president Joe Dumars on Saturday and all indications are that he was told he will be back."

TRANSLATION: "I don't know anything."

No quotes from anyone. I wouldn't read anything from this article. No substance at all.

Yes...the "all indications are" line could also be McCoskey spitting out the company line. Doesn't sound like he did a lot of "professional reporting".

And Flip is a good coach for a team who ain't no ambitious to finals as long as fans keep filling the Palace.

Just remember, that Bill Davidson said he's tired of paying for coaches that aren't here anymore.

Re: Flip will be back.

Another way to look at this is that if Joe lets on that Flip is gone it will be a summer long media distraction for Bill Laimbeer & co, which they dont need while they try to win another Championship.

Keep this hush hush and announce Flips firing about 60 seconds before you bring his replacement out from behind the curtain.

I'm not discouraged at all by that article. Flip can still be toast.

In hindsight, Joe did the right thing by Pistons fans/team/franchise, when Ben left. If Joe had chased him, it would have clogged up the team's payroll and left us with a player who is worth half of what he would have been getting paid.

Players get old, their skills decline. It's tough to watch, it hurts to see them have to step aside, but it's reality.
