Bulls GM To Team: 'This Is New Head Coach Vinnie Del Negro; He'll Be Staying With Us For A While'

CHICAGO—Introducing Vinnie Del Negro as a "great guy who has just hit a rough patch and needs somewhere to stay," Bulls GM John Paxson introduced his team to their new head coach on Wednesday. "I want everyone to extend Vinnie every courtesy while he implements his offense and tries to get his life back together," Paxson told his team in the somewhat tense United Center meeting. "Look, you know how it is. You've been there. You lost 49 games last season, so don't judge. Just help him out. Let him sleep on the couch, and when he needs to talk about it, listen." An embarrassed Del Negro thanked the team for taking him in, and promised he would stay out of their way and move on again as soon as he felt he was ready.

Re: Michael Curry to be the next Pistons coach

Since defense is such a mindset, I'm wondering if Curry as coach will once again return the Pistons to being the best defensive team in the league. I could see it happening.

If he relentlessly forces the starters to focus on it and rewards the bench based on their defensive effort, we could see a return to form. I think many of us here agree that watching the Pistons suffocate opponents with D is about the most satisfying brand of bball to watch. Certainly not for a national audience, but for homers.

Are you homer-phobic or something?

The Pistons were #1 in the entire NBA in points allowed last year (90.1 ppg). They were at or near the top in most defensive categories.

Maybe they need to improve their offense...

See everyone says that, but i don't think PA is a good indicator. Watching the games, i can say our defense was very bad in the PO's like at times borderline MEM awful.

And all the players quotes were on the same page with one thing; our defense sucks. Anyone you asked would talk about how the defense was lacking.

And Joe went out of his way to make sure we had a defensive coach, and talked about getting back to our roots . . .

The stats don't lie. If the Pistons defense sucks, perhaps the other defenses in the NBA suck even worse?

The defense didn't suck, but it could be even more dominant.

If you compare apples to apples and use points allowed per 100 possessions, then we allowed 103. SAS was at 102. Houston 101. And Boston was by far the leader at 99. Defense won the ship again.

In the playoffs, Cleveland allowed 101, which was much better than their regular season stat. Lebron was out a lot and Ben came aboard late. However, it looked like his addition helped in that area.

Re: Michael Curry to be the next Pistons coach

Someone please look at our defense for the playoffs, it appeared that it was simply awful.

Bottom line, our offensive rebounding sucked, our defense was not as good as it was in the Carlisle/LB years when we played 4 qtrs of really good D.

I think our defense was skewed because we would play 2 quarters of horrible defense, then a lightbulb would go off, then play the last 2 qtrs lockdown defense.

This goes back to our vaunted, turn it on, turn it off mentality.
