Late last week rumors surfaced that the Hawks might not be willing to pay Josh Smith this summer and that he might land in Philly as a result. Let's be clear on this, though. Smith is a restricted free agent and the Hawks will match any offer he receives. It's true they would prefer not to go over $11 million, but if they have to do it to keep him they will.
What the Hawks are really concerned about, more than just what they pay Smith, is how much it means they wind up having to pay Joe Johnson, who can opt out in two years, and Al Horford, whose contract will be up in two seasons, as well. Of course, there's a lot of basketball to be played between now and then, and if the Hawks emerge as one of the top teams in the conference between now and then it gets to be a lot easier to start paying guys the big bucks.
