Re: Walter Sharpe is the 1st pick---DJW traded

Some positive i guess on Sharpe

DraftExpress: Word on the Street: Rounding Up

Quote:
Walter Sharpe may be a surprising name called on draft night, after conducting strong workouts with teams like Cleveland, Denver, New Jersey, Washington and Charlotte, and showing surprisingly well there. Sharpe, a very highly touted member of the 2004 high school class, only played in 12 games this season before being ruled academically ineligible at UAB. He was later diagnosed with Narcolepsy (a sleeping disorder), but has numerous other red flags on his resume, including being kicked out of Mississippi State for breaking team rules, being shot in the stomach, and then later being arrested for disorderly conduct—all separate incidents.

Some team may regardless decide to take a chance on Sharpe due to his terrific combination of size, athleticism and skill playing both inside and out. One NBA Assistant General Manager told DraftExpress that he thinks Sharpe is a first round caliber talent who may not get to the middle of the second round due to the increasing buzz around him. He still has workouts to conduct with Utah, Detroit and the LA Lakers.
So we did work him out . . .

Only thing is that Joe didn't want to pay 1st round money because he didn't like anybody at 29th.

Oops, I was wrong, Portland is building a "B" squad since Seattle is losing their team.

Either that or they think this is APRIL 25. The NFL Draft.

I guess 4 PF's wasn't enough for Joe, he had to take another one. Undersized no less. We now have at least 3 who are 6'9 and under, Max, Dice and this Sharpe-e dude. Does this mean Sheed's safe?

this probably sounds ridiculous, but could he be clearing cap space?

Do draft picks count against the team's salary cap? If so, how much?

Unsigned first round picks are included in team salary immediately upon their selection in the draft. They count as 100% of the scale salary for that pick, unless there is a verbal agreement for a higher salary. An incident occurred prior to the 1997-98 season when Vancouver's first round pick, Antonio Daniels, revealed in an interview that he and the team had verbally agreed to a contract starting at the maximum salary (120% of the scale amount). Since verbal agreements apply to the salary cap, the league then changed the team's cap figure from the scale amount to 120% of scale.

Once a first round pick signs a contract, his actual salary is included in the team salary, of course.

Unsigned second round picks are not included in team salary. This is a loophole that Houston once tried to use by trading a first round pick for a second round pick in order to clear cap room.
maybe that's why he traded the 1 for two 2's?
