Posey or Magette . . . gotta get one.
When you break up the core with one or more players going, a huge dynamic comes into play. You probably will have Sheed, JMax and Stuckey playing different roles regardless of the big and slasher type you get.

Personally, I do not believe that Denver offered AI and Camby, because Joe knows that would get him into next years finals. AI would tear Boston up just from his play making (read: owning the paint) alone. Look at what Stuckey would learn from AI and the freedom to develop his own style, since AI would open up so many options. Still, no never knows.

Posey, Petrus and Magette have their strengths and weaknesses. The main point being, fulfill your major needs first and fine-tune your role players. I don't think JD wants any of them and is merely working pseudo interest for diversion.

Pistons update

As of 5 p.m. on Monday, everything was fairly quiet on both the trade and free agent signing front, as far as the Pistons are concerned. Don't hold your breath waiting for Corey Maggette to sign here. Joe Dumars has done his due diligence and made the proper inquiries, but it's highly unlikely he will wind up in a Pistons uniform.

Maggette wants more than the mid-level exception, first of all. The mid-level will be worth between $5.5 million and $5.8 million. If he has to "settle" for the mid-level, it sounds like his first choice would be Boston or San Antonio. His only real hope of getting more than that will be if Golden State fails on its bid to steal Elton Brand from the Clippers -- which seems likely. With Baron Davis leaving, the Warriors are suddenly awash in cap space. So, if Brand goes back to the Clippers, the Warriors could make a play for Maggette. If that scenario happens, perhaps -- and again, this is a big perhaps -- the Pistons could get involved with the Warriors.

Stay with me here: The Warriors have been trying to unload Al Harrington (two years left worth about $20 million) and they need a point guard. The Pistons could offer Chauncey Billups, but they would want a lot more than Harrington back in return. The Pistons have NOT discussed this scenario with the Warriors, and they have never been overly infatuated with Harrington. So, depending who else came in the deal, this might be too much of a lateral move to excite Joe Dumars.

Lateral moves or worse have pretty much been all he's been offered for his four core players thus far. And Dumars has made it clear he's not interested in making lateral moves. Unless something much bolder comes out of the blue, it is becoming more and more likely that the core group will return for one more run. We'll see.

Posey is intriguing. Teams, especially those already with lofty payrolls, can't afford to give a full mid-level to a reserve player, even one as accomplished as Posey. It doesn't look like the Celtics are going to offer him a full mid-level (especially if they land Maggette). I doubt the Pistons would offer him the full mid-level, either, but that could change. I am not throwing in the towel on Posey just yet, though that too is a long shot.

Okay...Maggette is now off the table too. I have to admit...thinking he might come here for the MLE was fantasy land

In another deal today, former Clipper Corey Maggette reached agreement to join the Golden State Warriors in a five-year deal worth about $50 million, according to NBA sources who requested anonymity because they are not authorized to speak about player movements. Maggette also opted out of the last year of his Clippers contract last week.

Magic to sign contract with Pietrus | floridatoday.com | FLORIDA TODAY

WTF?!
Quote:
The Orlando Magic have reached a verbal agreement with shooting guard Mickael Pietrus and expect to sign him to a multi-year contract Wednesday, general manager Otis Smith confirmed to FLORIDA TODAY.

Pietrus, a 6-foot-6, 200-pound shooting guard, is expected to earn almost all of the Mid-Level Exception, starting at 5.2 million next season. Pietrus, a native of Les Abymes, Guadeloupe, France, played all five of his NBA seasons with the Golden State Warriors.

The signing of Pietrus ends the Magic’s chase of free-agent shooting guard Corey Maggette and could end their chances of retaining combo guard Keyon Dooling.

Pietrus is especially appealing to the Magic because of his ability to defend. He is a strong defender with a long wingspan, traits that appealed to Smith. Smith, who used to work with the Golden State Warriors, is quite familiar with Pietrus’ toughness and defensive grit.

Smith said the Magic needed to upgrade their shooting guard position in order to make a dramatic improvement next season. He is expected to be the opening day starter at shooting guard.

``In the Eastern Conference you had better be able to defend that position. We think he can really help us do that. And he can shoot the 3.’’

The signing also means that last season’s starting shooting guard, Maurice Evans, likely won’t return
I repeat WTF?!

edited to add;

Ok i just read all of the MLE. I feel a little better.

Re: Maggette has offer on table from Boston

So who is left for Joe to pursue? If Posey goes to the Hornets, then we are left with James Jones, or retreads in Delfino, Mo Evans, or Smush???

I guess a trade is needed to make sure some improvement is noted, because the teams around us are improving and guess what Joe ---we will be opening the first round of the playoffs on the road...

He signed with the Heat.

Re: Maggette has offer on table from Boston

We are cheap

Dumars staying patient with offseason possibilities
Quote:
Here's the situation the Pistons are in today, the first day teams can sign free agents:
They want to use the free-agent market to buy a back-up wing player, but they aren't looking for a long-term purchase. Ideally, they want a veteran player on a two-year deal using a portion of the mid-level exception (expected to be about $5.8 million).
What president Joe Dumars doesn't want to do is commit more than two years or more than half the mid-level to a reserve player.

As of Tuesday, they had made contact with six players: the Clippers' Corey Maggette, Warriors' Mickael Pietrus, Jazz's C.J. Miles, Trailblazers' James Jones, Celtics' James Posey and Raptors' Carlos Delfino. None are considered as good bets to sign with the Pistons.

Maggette is going to get at least the full mid-level. The Warriors could possibly pay him more than the mid-level. The Celtics and Spurs are also in the mix.

Posey will also most likely get the full mid-level. The Celtics are the front-runner to retain his services, but might have to give him a four-year offer to close the deal. Posey will be 32 in January.
Pietrus on Tuesday agreed to a deal with Orlando starting at approximately $5.2 million.

The Pistons also backed away from Jones. He had opted out of $3.1 million and the Heat have offered him a five-year deal starting at approximately $4 million.

That left two restricted free agents, Miles and former Piston Delfino. These would appear to be last-resort type signings.

Before it came down to signing one of those two players, Dumars would probably first attempt to re-sign Walter Herrmann, the Pistons' restricted free agent. Herrmann could make more money playing overseas, so he might balk at a one or two-year offer.

Again, there's no urgency for Dumars to sign a free agent. With the exception of Maggette, he's looking for an eighth or ninth guy in the rotation. Those types of players are readily available.

Dumars is still exploring trades, and with that in mind, he might be foolish to make a long-term, high-dollar commitment to a tier-two free agent.
He might be better to keep financial and roster flexibility until all trade scenarios are exhausted.
Offer Posey the MLE damnit!
