HoopsHype - Articles - Randolph show

Game 3: Detroit 84 – LA Lakers 73

In a game primarily dominated by his superior Pistons squad, Rodney Stuckey came to take over the game. Stuckey finished the game with 21 points, 4 assists, and 5 rebounds and was relatively efficient, shooting 6-17 and going 9-10 from the field. Lakers’ second-round pick Joe Craford seemed to struggle with the rhythm of a higher-paced game, leading to 4 turnovers, but he did finish with 9 points on 2-4 shooting. Pat Calathes, a standout wing player from St. Joseph’s, did not play for the Lakers

Studs: Joe Dumars couldn’t have asked for anything more from Amir Johnson, who only played for just under 17 minutes but was flat-out productive, finishing with 12 points on 5-5 shooting as well as grabbing 4 boards and notching 2 steals. Rookie Trent Plaisted also was solid for the Pistons in the low block, consistently boxing out his opponents under the rim and playing very good post defense. He finished with 10 points (4-5 shooting), and 5 rebounds. Lastly, Arron Afflalo had a nice game as well, shooting 6-14 from the field for his 15 points; he also had 2 steals and 3 rebounds. Coby Karl led the Lakers with 14 points, knocking down two of his four three-pointers, and had 4 rebounds as well as three assists and a steal.

Duds: Cheikh Samb, who Dumars really likes because of the work he has put in the gym since being drafted two years ago, didn’t perform well offensively on the block. Considering most of his shots were near the basket, his 3-12 shooting performance shows a need to improve offensively. He isn’t going to get many opportunities on offense in any case, so he must convert the chances he gets.

This years top 2 picks Rose and Beasley have already been injured and now the Clippers # 1 pick Eric Gordon will missed the rest if the summer league do to hamstring injury... Some of these games are almost like pick-up games and the way Stuckey was attacking Friday, I can see him getting injured again too.

I know we want to see him develop, but I would play him sparingly and let Will Bynum run the point when these guys get to physical out there. maybe play him out there with Amir to see if the can develop a rhythm together.

Somebody needs to work with Amir the rest of the summner in private to help him improve his defensive positioning. (Good one about him getting one of those 9 fouls while sitting on the bench whoever said it)

Samb did look bigger than the 215 pounds that the announcer indicated he was as his upper body did look bigger on my TV, so I was surprise when the guy said he had only put on 25 pounds in the last year and half....

The announcers sounded like complete tools at times. One of them praised Samb for putting on so much weight that he was all the way up to 215, then the other wisecracked that that's not much of a gain for how long he's been in the league. I wanted to tell them to get a clue.

Since I was probably the only one who was mainly interested in Plaisted's performance, I'll say that I loved Trent's defensive intensity and hustle getting out on the pick and roll. It's interesting to watch him go from being the number one or two option on offense at BYU to having to fend for himself for putbacks and the occasional free throws. But I was pleasantly surprised to see him hold his own in the first game. He knows how to box out and get defensive rebounds by denying his opponent a chance to get at the basket, and when on offense, hustling back to defend the basket instead of trying to be a hero to get to the offensive rebound. Too often I get frustrated seeing the hyped up, so-called elite players fail to do those basic things and get burned time and again by athletic opponents who exploit their lack of focus.

Re: Vegas anyone????

I just logged on to watch Pistons Summer League game and it's all messed up. It's buffering a gazillion times and going like four minutes without any sound and then giving me sound for three seconds. Also the picture is freezing when this happens and says "Buffering".

I swear to God I hate these computers. It's like a tease I'm going to get to watch our new coach and the youngsters and then either the traffic is too high or my computer can't deal with the feed. Although it worked fine for League Pass.

Dang. I was looking forward to watching Amir and Samb tonight.

If anyone has any suggestions you can pm me. I read above that some of you weren't even able to get a screen other than nba logo. Dang.

I guess I can sit here like an obsessed fan starving for Pistons action and WATCH THE BOXSCORE. Count Amir's fouls with dread in my heart. Samb looks good to me out there. We'll see how he looks in the BOXSCORE.

I agree. This isn't pre-season NFL. Let the guys do what they do. If they're going to get hurt during the summer, let it happen with Mike Abdenour and Arnie Kander on the bench.

Re: Vegas anyone????

When I watched the game I saw a kid that is anxious to show what he can do. A little too anxious. I think Amir heard the talk and thought he did enough last year to warrant more time. I am not sure Joe can go to him this year and say the same thing without throwing Flip under the bus.

As the season wears on; Amir will find his rhythm. I think he is the least of our worries. We need a back up 3. Would like to see AA fill that roll but am not sure he is big enough?
