In any event, Bill D. ended up paying just about 10 million in salary in '05 anyway (the 7 million buyout of Brown's contract and the '05 portion of Flip's 6 million a year salary). I don't know what it would have taken to keep Larry happy (8, 10, 12?), but nobody has ever reported that Bill D. offered anything in the way of a raise after the championship season.
Is it common for coaches to get new contracts the year after a title? Even if its their 1st year of a large contract? Before we slam Davison it would be fair to note if its common practice or not to do so.

Has anyone reported that Davidson didn't offer a huge raise?

That's a fair question, and the answer is probably that this has not been a traditional practice. But employment conditions for coaches have changed a lot in the past ten years, and I don't think a great franchise should necessarily be guided by the old norms and practices. Coaching salaries in the last decade or so have skyrocketed, and coaches who don't produce are more vulnerable to being fired, sometimes even at the behest of star players. Coaches seem to have more power to demand high salaries, but less job security. In that environment, why not be open to renegotiating a contract to reward a coach for a championship season (and a near-championship the following year) if it keeps the coach happy?

Didn't Nellie get a new deal after getting Golden State out of the first round last year?

Yup, but it got to the point where he basically threatened not to come back and Mullin caved.

If the time bomb had not gone off then, it would have gone off sooner or later. That's what a time bomb does.
