Joe is willingly taken a step back in order to make a bigger leap forward!

Quote:
Two pieces of very good news:
  1. There isn’t a team better poised for future success than the Pistons. Teams around the league are bleeding money and are prepared to all but give great players away to escape salary. The Pistons will be well below the salary cap with greater options to trade for or lure top tier free agents.
  2. This season isn’t over. The Pistons have struggled, but have also been to the mountain before and as Arron Afflalo says, “We don’t fear anybody. You have to beat the best to be the best, and whether we face them in round one or later, it doesn’t matter.” Michael Curry says, “When we’re healthy, (and they will be soon) I like our chances against anybody.”
When the Pistons won in 2004, everybody had a theory. Some said it was because Ben was a great leader and a defensive giant. Others credited Larry Brown. The next guy would say it’s the All Star back court of Billups and Hamilton. Another would say it was getting Rasheed Wallace at the trade deadline. And some were sure that it was simply Dumars’ vision of what a team was, and that it was his genius that created it.

Now that Dumars is transitioning and the win-loss column has temporarily paid the price, people try to explain the source of the decline just as they tried to explain the successes. Is it the rookie coach? Was it trading Billups? Is it that Iverson doesn’t fit? Or, has Joe lost his touch?
He hasn’t. He’s willingly taken a step back in order to make a bigger leap forward, realizing full well that in a situation where players and fans have taken 55 wins for granted, he’d suffer the slings and arrows for maintaining his vision for success.
PISTONS: From the Sidelines

Someone finally in the Pistons Org. admits we weren't going to be in contention.

for success you need to step back first, to create room for success...

Yeah, because success can't push back on failure.

I swear, it's become almost impossible to read anything produced in the media these days because it relies on misdirection and assuming the reader is dumber than a rock.

I would hold on guys. There has been a very significant change with the passing of Bill Davidson and the new ownership. I don't know what to expect from Karen Davidson but it will be something different. Maybe she has a different vision for the team. Maybe she will hold Dumars more accountable for his actions. Who knows at this point.

I think Dumars is doing a fine job. We all make mistakes. I just don't like being told those gaffes were really strokes of genius.

He started out so well and seems to have become just another GM since 05.

I am willing to give him a chance and see what he can do over the next 2 years. The situation is demanded action so hopefully he can get the team back into contention.

He has been willing to become satisfied with his coaches supplying wins. It's a very comfortable bed to feel old body contours. Instead of some needed tweaking and incremental changes, he is now faced with significant problems and most have been mental this year. A factor many of us have pointed out for the last 2-3 years. He has very little options, even with the significant cap-space, since he doesn't have a perceptive enough coach to create a cohesive new unit that can mix and mix quickly.

One thing could change this (at least for getting high talent within one summer). With significant cap-space and a huge slippage of salary leverage within the league's players this year; you might gain leverage by accumulating an extra talent expansion by going over into luxury tax area. This will, in one stroke, fill-in the new talent additions. MrD would never allow this, but the new additions might have a different menu.

The key move for me is if JD keeps Curry for next year, if so then you are looking at least for a two-three year transition into .500 ball.
