Suns coach D’Antoni takes on front office roles

Updated: 5:07 p.m. ET March 10, 2006

PHOENIX - Suns coach Mike D’Antoni was put in charge of the team’s basketball operations following the departure of Bryan Colangelo to the Toronto Raptors.
Owner Robert Sarver said Friday that in addition to coaching D’Antoni will become executive vice president of basketball operations and general manager.
“Mike has been an integral part of our success and has been involved in all decision making,” Sarver said. “He will now lead our basketball operations, supported by the extensive talents within his department.”

First step toward mediocrity. To coin a phrase, the suns are starting to set. Why do teams do this? Doesn't it always fail?

While I agree that they seem to be handing him the keys too quickly, there's no reason to believe D'Antoni would do a bad job. Who would you rather have? D'Antoni or Zeke? Or Babcock? Steve Kerr? Bill Simmons?

Somebody different. I think the coach and GM roles are too different for most to succeed in both.

O.k., D'Antoni over Zeke.
