Re: Old-School Style Is Out!?

Well, it's hard to accuse the Pistons of having much of a power game, with a big guy in the middle playing with his back to the basket. So while some recent rule changes have limited the kinds of defense Detroit used to play, they ought to have the same benefits to their offense (as indeed the Heat benefit from the changes through Wade).

Or it could be that I just assume anything Rosen writes is dead wrong even before I start to read.

Re: Old-School Style Is Out!?

I don't think it means more than this:
NBA's health tied to LeBron's - AM New York

Quote:
Obviously, hardcore basketball fans will sit through any game and watch any team, but the casual audience demands stars who transcend the game. From an entertainment standpoint, LeBron certainly can't be put in Jordan's classification - nobody can - but in today's NBA, when overall interest is waning, everything and everyone is being graded on a curve. He definitely makes the heart skip faster than Tim Duncan. Or an aging, gravity-challenged Shaquille O'Neal. Or the sleep-inducing Pistons.
Quote:
You would think LeBron currently is being driven by a desire to keep proving himself, the way Jordan and Magic Johnson and Bird and others were during their early careers. After four enormously hyped seasons, he hasn't won an MVP, hasn't gone past the second round of the playoffs and saw Dwyane Wade, another member of the 2003 draft, win a championship before him. That should be good for at least a trip to the Eastern finals, you think?

Well, let's cross our fingers and hope he gets out of the East. Especially if the alternative is the Pistons.

Re: Old-School Style Is Out!?

If I have to watch a non-pistons game, I agree that it is more exciting to watch a good personality or amazing athleticism. I don't really find Shaq/Wade/Lebron to have either though.

The Suns are fun to watch. Dallas too. Dwight Howard is fun, cause of his explosiveness. Kobe is OK if you are really bored. And I really think the Bulls are entertaining because of their energy level and teamwork... same with the Raptors.

They are just really stuck on the Jordan model where they want one guy to carry the league. I think they need more diversity. Market Lebron and Wade a little less and put more emphasis on team/ dynasty marketing. People liked to watch the Bad Boys right? The NBA needs villains too, and they seem reluctant to admit that.

The Pistons could have been the villains in '04 because of the stingy D.

Re: Old-School Style Is Out!?

Old school style is hustle and flow, physical contact and smooth playmaking.

New school style is run, shoot the trey and dunk.

Over the years, guards have forgotten how to shoot a teardrop, big men no longer have a credible hook shot and small forwards no longer post up or work off the block.

I refuse to watch the Bulls play Miami. Superstition.

It was also on at the same time as the Raps, so I'm not sure I believe your reason.

Re: Old-School Style Is Out!?

Time spent watching non-Pistons games in the last week < 10 minutes

I love how everyone keeps assuming I am this big Raps fan. I want them to do well for purely selfish reasons. The better basketball does in Canada, the better coverage I get. Our television choices are very limited, and even paying for every conceivable sports package available, and being with an hour's drive of the Palace, I still manage to miss 8~10 games a year.

And this season, I really got into the Euro experience in Toronto, something that even the most soft-core Darkonites should be able to appreciate.
