| Vernon Maxwell arrested on probation violation Quote:
Former Florida basketball standout Vernon Maxwell is being held without bond in Alachua County Jail for violating terms of his probation on child support charges.
Maxwell turned himself into Alachua County authorities Sunday after a national warrant was issued for his arrest. According to Spencer Mann of the State Attorney's Office, Maxwell violated terms of his probation by failing to pay the state for his supervision, possessing a controlled
substance and failing to pay court-ordered child support. Mann said Maxwell was arrested in Mecklenberg County, N.C., in May of 2006 on drug possession charges.
Court records show Maxwell is close to $350,000 behind in child support payments to the son he fathered with Gainesville resident Myra Jammer. Jammer said Maxwell has not paid child support on a consistent basis for the past 10 years.
Maxwell was sentenced to five years probation on Oct. 27, 2005.
An arraignment date has been set for Sept. 6.
Maxwell, 41, was one of Florida's most dynamic scorers, leading the Gators to two NCAA Tournament appearances during a four-year career from 1985-88. He went on to 13-year NBA career, winning an NBA title as a starter with the Houston Rockets in 1994.
