Chris McCosky / The Detroit News

Ben Wallace will be back in town today, and unless you have something against affordably-priced sneakers, booing him this time might be inappropriate.

Wallace, who helped the Pistons win the 2004 NBA championship before signing with the rival Chicago Bulls last summer, will be signing autographs and showing off his new basketball shoe at 4 this afternoon at the Steve & Barry's store at Fairlane Town Center in Dearborn.

The shoe he's touting, the Big Ben Collection, comes with a retail price of $14.95.

"All of the feedback has been positive," said Wallace, who last season began wearing the $14.95 Starbury sneakers produced by Steve & Barry's for Knicks guard Stephon Marbury. The $15 sneaker has caused a stir in the footwear industry. About the only people who haven't been singing the praises of the Starbury and Big Ben Collection are those affiliated with major shoe companies such as Nike and adidas, whose sneakers continue to retail in excess of $100.

"Those people haven't said anything to me," Wallace said, chuckling.

"There's no need to pay all that money for shoes."

As for his reception in Dearborn today?

He said: "I am still the same person. I just play for a different team. It'll be all right."
Way to go BB.

Big Ben is still the man no matter what team he's on. He's still a Piston at heart.

I bought some Starbury's and they fell apart after one month...I don't think the big show companies have anything to worry about.

You didn't go out and try to play basketball with those shoes, did you? Lots of things will fall apart if not used properly.

If you read the fine print, the shoe has a two inch vertical minimum for maximum shoe life. This is due to the 'hang time' factor that allows the material to expand to it normal size after being compressed.

I got some Starburys. I thought they were comfortable but the sole material wore out fast but I probably exceeded the max weight tolerance on them.

The other thing is that its a narrow sole.
