Meaningless stats??

On occassion I have thought about starting this "meaningless stats" thread that tracks peculiar stats, streaks, odd numbers, the stat of the night and so on, but thought it would die a slow death. Please keep this one alive by throwing in that odd one when you run across it.

It's obvious that Devean Georges' heckling 0-11 form the field may have been the stat of last night as it was rare and an embarrasment to him. He was out there for 33 mins and kept shooting???

Did anybody noticed that the Pistons had scored exactly 55 points at the half in each of the last three straight games vs the Bobcats, Hawks and Pacers?? In fact in the last two games the 1st and 2nd quarters were identical as the Pistons scored 25 pts and 30 pts in both games... Things that make you go hmm?

Those wondering about Sheed's tech count, he is the league leader with 9 at the break. But he has some company right behind him with a few key Celtics with 8, 7 and 6 techs.
FOX Sports on MSN - NBA - Stats

Other than Sheed having the dubious honor of leading the league in techs, the Pistons really have no other players in the top five of any of the major categories. (Someone please find one and keep this thread alive). The Pistons do it with team work and as Buddha or someone pointed out in another thread, the Pistons can win without someone having a monster game point wise as they scored 96 points last night without a single player scoring more than 14.

Team wise the Pistons lead the lead with the least amount of turnovers per game with 11.61

Other odd stats this season, the Pistons are 22-1 when scoring 100 points, but 22-0 and scoring over 100 points...

Also heard the Miami Heat announcer state in that game last week that the Pistons had won 32 straight games when they had at least 24 assists in a game. Well they dished out 30 in that game and have dropped at leasst 24 dimes in 3 of the last four games so I think that streak is up to 36 now. So if the Pistons get 24 assists, put it in the win column.

Billups is in the top five in free throw percentage and assists per turnover, which supposably are more predictive of wins than points, rebounds, or assists.

I believe Tim Hardaway holds the game record for field goal futility 0 - 17 in a 1990 game.

Quote:
On 12/27 Hardaway made NBA history against the San Antonio Spurs. He missed all 17 of his field-goal attempts in regulation and overtime, setting a league mark for futility.

AJ now in his 3rd season

Field Goal Attempts per 36 minutes

2005-06 - 9.2
2006-07 - 9.6
2007-08 - 9.4

Career -- 9.5

What makes this stat odd is that his sample sizes are so small that you would think that that would be at least 1 of the 4 numbers that was decidedly different from the other 3

Re: Meaningless stats??

Blocks per 48 minutes (players who have played > 48 minutes this year).

#1- Amir Johnson- 5.79 (not sure if last night's game is even in there)
#2- Marcus Camby
#3- Alonzo Mourning
#4- Theo Ratliff
#5- Cheikh Samb... actually, he's disqualified due to too few minutes.

AJ is #1 in the league for rebounds per 40 at the Forward position (not counting players who get less than 5 mpg).

Rip Hamilton is #3 in 3-point shooting percentage at .481 behind #1 Kapono and #2 J. Jones.

Re: Meaningless stats??

Rip Hamilton must hold some kind of record for total and consecutive games played wearing a mask.

Re: Meaningless stats??

I knew you guys could come up with some beauties while we wait for the second half of the season to start.

I know Dwight Howard leads the league in dunks with somewhere close to 200, because ABC/ESPN tell us, but I searched hi and dry for those stats just to see how far down the list JMAX was. We know he leads the league in missed power dunks...maybe Mason is keeping track of those.

Re: Meaningless stats??

NBA Basketball Dunk-O-Meter - CBSSports.com

Just some highlights from the list:

JMax #29- 53 dunks
Mo Evans- #48- 37
Ben Wallace- #50- 36
Tay Prince- #53- 35
Nazr Moham- #80- 22
Darko Milly- #83- 21
Sheed- #91- 20
Amir Johnson- #95- 19
Dyess Mc- #95- 19

Rip with 6
Bresec with 3 (pathetic)
Murray with 3
Stuckey with 3
CBill with 1
Afflalo with 1

Conclusion: AJ dunks a lot. I need to figure out his dunks/ 48 and compare to Dwight Howard. Give me a minute... Nope. DHo dunks 4.24 per 48 while Amir is only at 2.75. There is a vast gulf of dunking frequency which seperates the man-child from the (what's Amir's nickname?).

It's about time he gets one I would say. Gotta let Sheed come up with it though.

Maxey is 29th with 53 dunks

Mikey Moore is 19th with 65, just ahead of Bosh and Gasol.

Tay is 52nd with 35
Sheed is 91st with 21
AJ is 95th with 19 in 332 minutes
Dyess tied with AJ with 19
Hayes 169th with 7
Rip has 6
Primo has 3
Murray has 3
Stuckey has 3
C-Bill has 1
Herrmann has 1

AA is not listed, so he must not have any, though I thought he got a dunk about a week ago on the play after Stuckey got a dunk. Maybe the stats person didn't believe it was possible so they didn't count it as a dunk. LOL

Howard has 185 in 2,092 minutes
Amare S. is second with 117 in 1,608 minutes

Top Five Dunkers plus AJ.
Dunks - Minutes Played Per Dunk
------------------------
Howard 185 -11.3
Amare S. 117 - 13.7
Marion 111 - 16.3
Chandler 106 - 15.8
Dalembert 90 - 19.5

AJ 19 - 17.5
