MINIMUM PLAYER SALARY EXCEPTION -- Teams can offer players minimum salary contracts even if they are over the cap. Contracts can be up to two years in length. For two year contracts, the second season salary is the minimum salary for that season. The contract may not contain a signing bonus. This exception also allows minimum salary players to be acquired via trade. There is no limit to the number of players that can be signed or acquired using this exception.

This exception begins to reduce in value after the first day of the season. For example, if there are 180 days in the season, then this exception reduces in value by 1/180 of its initial value each day. If a team signs a minimum salary player 90 days into the season, it can pay the player only half the minimum salary.

Re: Brent Barry

You can always sign players to the min, that is a cap exception.

I'm not sure the Spurs can re-sign Barry.

Traded Players who are waived by their new team cannot be re-signed by the team that traded them until 30 days during the season or 20 days in the offseason has passed. We'll call this one the "Joe Dumars Rule".
So it's all contingent on the last day that a player can join a roster and be eligible for the playoffs.

Re: Brent Barry

Even though you can do it, does it still allow you to get the luxury tax distribution?

it's all explained in that link.

And if it gets you a ring, who cares about that for ONE SEASON.

It's not like the roughly 6 mill gets magically added to your cap or something...

Would you rather be the titleless 07' pistons 500k under the luxury tax limit, or the 07' world champion spurs just over the limit?

When you "cap out", you are restricted in how much you can spend to sign players. But signing players using any of these so-called exceptions still adds to your aggregate payroll.

So if you are over the lux. tax threshold, you are eligible for a smaller share. If you are under, you are entitled to a greater share.

I need to overhaul the #s, but I've been busy today. Suffice it to say, I'm pretty sure the Pistons will be under the tax # by a few million.

Well, it could cost you between $4 and $6 million in redistributed tax monies, so if you are over, not only did you pay dollar for dollar tax, you also miss out on a nice chunk of the rebate.

Is winning a title worth giving up (potentially) $7 million? For a privately owned team of modest means like the Spurs, probably not.

Re: Brent Barry

The only reason that I care is because I'm trying to assess the likelihood of it happening. To add a 3-point shooting specialist like Barry, Joe and Davidson probably won't make a $6M gamble. If the rule allows them to do it and it only costs the amount that they pay him, then I could see them going for it.

The only problem with that would be that we couldn't add a big man to the mix... unless we also bought someone else... like Dixon. That's a lot of buying out and wasted money for not much return.

i agree that most of the time you should be under, but if you need to go over for a year or two it's not the end of the world.

yeah, it's 7 mill, have Bon Jovi play 1 more night and sell a few more mullet wigs.

Not a big deal if you are talking about isolated situations and you don't make it a habit.

We need to get the Finley's, Posey's, Barry's, Kurt Thomas', and not the guys we've been getting.

I believe the trade machine on ESPN lists the payroll if you don't want to do it long hand.

Pistons Payroll: $67,063,085 Cap Room: $-11,433,085

With Dixon included...

$67.865 million appears to be the magic # for this season.

Re: Brent Barry

Maybe they could do a Bon Jovi concert/ Pistons game and charge twice as much. The band could play during timeouts, free throws, and halftime.
