Being able to be the best or near the best in your sport makes you an athlete and a superior one.

If we're talking pure, raw athletic ability it's usually some combination of speed, strength and vertical ability. Tweety is one of the fastest players in the league with mad hops. There are some players who excel at their sport but many will admit they are not very athletic...see Dan Marino.

Re: Cheryl Ford - WNBA All-Star MVP

Now that WNBA Allstar MVP Cheryl Ford has been sidelined for the remainder of the season, can the Shock repeat without her inside presence? Does this correlate to the Pistons going to battle in the playoffs without Ben or in today's world Rasheed and hopes that they can still win it all?

Here's areal reply:

Cheryl has become one of the league's most sexiest players this year. Sh e is growing up as a 'woman'(see the HBO intrview) and has a 'I'm gonna rock your world" type of deamenor. What I'm saying is in spite of all efforts to the contrary, if the WNBA became a lil more SEXIER, their attendance would increase 50%!!!!! Tweety NOlan in a cutoff, belly revealing shirt with NBA shorts from the 70"S!!??? Swin Cash and Tara 'GOT MILK??" Braxton in a halter-styl tank top??? LETS GET REAL!!! LETS GO SHOCK!!! SHOW THEM $%$%$$%!!!! BTW...I have returned from my summer break more EVIL than ever!! I MISSS BENNNNN!!!!

I know this is a male-dominated board so I'll probably catch hell for this, but we devalue women if we only look at them as aesthetically pleasing beings. Why not celebrate the WNBAers for their skills? I see where HQ is coming from as far as raising attendance but I think it cheapens their hard work by saying it cannot stand on its own merits and they need to sex it up. Frankly, what the league needs to do is market to lesbians. Half the league has been rumoured to be lesbian and plenty of lesbians attend these games. But the league won't do this because they're afraid they'll drive the families away. We live in a closed-minded society, I'm afraid.

Gotta go against this train of thought. I love sexy women, but not as a sales tool for the WNBA. I'd rather see Cheryl Ford at the Mall in a nice outfit, rather than dressed up for "stare" in the game.........

You won't catch hell for it because we've got a lot of diverse opinions my friend.

And you're right. Selling sexiness does take away from the game and there are other, targeted business models that cater to selling the sex first.

I think the WNBA can learn from the LPGA. It's taken some time, and it will never be the PGA in attendance or money, but it has become a recognized and stable business. Gimmickry just takes away from that.

Another thing to consider is that while the domestic sports market may be saturated, women's basketball has a lot of room to grow internationally. There are a lot of young women in other countries who need role models and a stage to aspire to with their athletic careers.
