They should put a pic of Stevie in the Dictionary next to the definition of "class".
This guy was an amazing player, and an even better person.

Dang...the guy was a Red Wing for almost half of my life. Class act from start to finish. Definitely brings up strong emotions to think about it.
May life bring you the best of everything, Stevie Y.

One of their best players at the end of the season, hopefully he comes back at least as a assistant coach to motivate them.

I'm sure the hometown newspapers are going to be all over this tommorrow.
I'll try to keep the board posted on that stuff.
Hail to the Captain!

The Yzerman jersey will never go out of style in MoTown.
Not quite like my Fedorov Jersey.

He's stated for a while now that he has already figured that into his reirement.
Somewhere in the front office first though I think.
Probably just to keep regular hours and spend time with his family like a normal dad and husband.

The longest tenure as an NHL Captain in the history of the NHL. 20 years.
Man, that's impressive.
This team will have a big hole at leadership to fill now.

He was a great player, a nine-time NHL All-Star, 6th all time in NHl career points with 692 goals, 1063 assists, and 1755 points. What a career!

He's just 60 or so shy of Gordie Howe's point total.
That's impressive, with the way the league went low scoring there in the end of the 90's and early 2000's.

There is a lot more coverage on FSN here. If you're just reading this thread, it's 1:44pm on Monday the 3rd. And there is more to come from FSN.
I read that the press conference was scheduled, and when I went to my cable guide it said "Darts".
Thanks FSN for scrambling to cover this.

FSN is doing a great job, on cable here is says darts until 2 and then inside poker. They will probably just show those shows tomorrow or a different time. Yzerman is way more important than poker.

I just wished he would go out on a more positive note (winning the stanley cup) then retiring. I'm sure other teams were kicking themselves by not drafting him first, instead of getting drafted 4th.
Here is a site that shows how much you know on him (I don't know to link it, so just copy and paste it) http://www.funtrivia.com/playquiz.cfm?qid=138634&origin (http://www.funtrivia.com/playquiz.cfm?qid=138634&origin)

If it wasn't about 90 degrees here, I'd have that Yzerman sweater on. Oh hell, I'll put it on anyway.
I love moment No. 3 (see link), when Captain Courageous jumps for joy. Anyone got any video?

Unfortunately, Ben Wallace leaving has taken some of the spotlight off of where it really belongs: On Stevie Y. This guy epitomizes Detroit in much the way Al Kaline did. Yzerman is a hero, plain and simple. I'm not even a huge hockey fan and this guy is my favorite Detroit athlete, and probably always will be. He retired here in Detroit, too, so he has one-upped Ben Wallace in my mind. A good one from Mitch Albom:

Ben Wallace can't hold a candle to Yzerman.
Ben was in 3rd or 4th grade when Yzerman was drafted by the Wings.
Anyone who has followed Detroit sports at all should be doing what I've been doing:
Pretend like Ben was a spoiled step-brother who acted up and got what he wanted, while Yzerman is the "elder" that you shoud respect.

The difference is that the Wings rarely lost a good player over money. While Bill D. has been for the most part very successful since 1986, The Illitches are the best team owners in Detroit.
First class people who don't have fickle personal demands or loyalties that change faster than the weather.
As Steve said, paraphrased; "They are committed to excellence".
